The risk is non-zero, but it is very, very low. Perhaps only 1 or 2 Fatal, Smoking-related Crashes per year in the UK.

it`s the notion that it isn`t distracting rather than accident statistics.

Maybe it should be introduced as part of the driving test.

Funny you say that, years ago when I was taking driving lessons the instructor smoked like a chimney, I was a smoker then and always looked across in the hope he'd offer me one which he never did until the day we drove back from the test, he said that now I'd passed he'd let me have one and showed me how to light it, flick the ash out of the quarter window and also the correct way to throw it out of that window

Just proves what I have said all along ie 99% of smoker, so-called have a window open at lower speeds and chuck out their trash on to the road/pavement or the public.

A friend of ours said that a fag end landed on her feet in her town as a van drove pst and the clown checked out his fag.

Just as dangerous as fiddling with a phone.”

Excellent summary of the facts.

That is no proof whatsoever.

A friend of mine was there and said that didn't happen.

You have proved nothing, LOL I can prove you can still buy car cigarette lighters and car ashtrays

Roll ups would go out if not puffed so even less risk of fire.

Trying to hold a Big Mac together & eat it while driving would be far more difficult to concentrate on the road, as would having a row with a passenger or over the phone.

Maybe a campaign should be started to ban drive in food places too...

Screaming babies/kids arguing in the back seats? They are far more of a distraction than a fag.

I imagine smoking a cig whilst driving is easy, seeing as I can do the following whilst behind the wheel:-

Drink a coffee
Shave
Tie my shoelace (using the cruise control to maintain speed)

Some say that MH370 was brought down when the pilot chucked a fag-end out and it caught in a fuel inlet valve.

Well at least you are checking your mirrors.

It's so easy to see who the smokers/drivers litter louts are this thread.

The sad thing is these smokers are safely aware that no one is going to catch them, fine them and they will contiune to smoke behind the wheel putting at risk those around their car eg other drivers/passengers/perdestrians. Then they insist to keep the window ope to share their stench with others

Sadly, this moaning driving benid a naff bmw m3 look alike car, the clown had its window open, fag in one hand, slow moving in town and the stench got into my car by the time i pressed the off button on air vent, then i keep a goo 25 feet between this losers car and mine to rid of the smell. As expected, the clown threw out the fag end into the middle of the road and bounced off the side of another car. Again, I felt like picking the fag end up and shoving it up his ugly mush, but I have not got the courage or the strength to do that.

People will recall that using hand held mobiles were legal at one time now consider very dangerous, so only a matter of times before these idiots start getting fined.

If you see someone throwing out their fag end and have a camera in your car, send it to the police

I get punished twice haviing to look at these clowns doing things like that as i have a suv sit high up and keep an eye on the mirrors

Driving behind smokers just the stench gives the game away.

The act of of lighting up, finding the bits, picking them up, lighting up, while steering, changing gear, indicating, keeping an eye on the road ahead, checking mirrors,.....nope, your not in full control or have 100% attention on driving (what's around you).

I saw that that the car in front of me on the way home was "all over the shop", in the gutter, on the white line, way under speed limit, couldn't drive in a straight line, my bet is he was lighting up or typing on his phone. Either way, very poor control. Might have been drunk!

Personsonally if I were elected to power I would ban drivers from smoking in my first 100 days, but I wouldn't ban smoking in open spaces, town centres etc.

Excellent post. May I add that if I was in number 10, I'd ban smoking in public places from immdiate effect.

Driving! You drive yet you want others banned for polluting the atmosphere to a far lesser extent?
I presume you only ever drive in the event of emergencies when alternatives are not available?

Good idea. I'm sure the police will find a good home for the cameras.

As a person how no longer drives, and my transport is a mobility scooter i light up a fag as i go down the pavement as it drowns out the stench of the diesel and petrol fumes coming from cars, but its all part of life now you cannot beat the smell of a good cigar or someone smoking a pipe which is rare today.

Well according to the AA smoking is a distraction, and according to the AA a driver involved in an accident where smoking is proved to be a contributory factor, could be charged with careless or dangerous driving

I'm more worried that you're constantly on the look out for bad smokers whilst you're at the wheel. Maybe concentrate on your car for a little bit?
