This opera on BBC Four sounds like less of a shambles then SPOTY tonight, The winner won it three years in a row. A kick in the teeth for the Olympics people and will not be watching it again.

They got the trophy out to him pretty quick considering the voting didn't close too long ago. Or have I missed something?
Its a replica trophy. You can see the real one on the stage.

Does the fact that Andy Murray keep winning it every year have anything to do with the fact that Wimbledon is about the only major sporting event to which the BBC still have the rights to show perchance?

What a crock of stuff...just had the most successful Olympic and Paralympic games yet some poxy football team wins best team award - shameful
Which do you think was the longer odds, GB finishing with a record medal haul or that poxy team winning the Premier League?

Well they have the Olympics so is that why 2 of the Olympians came 2nd and 3rd then?

Maybe the people who vote the most are tennis fans and of course Murray will have the whole of Scotland behind him.

Or Murray is just the best sportsperson we have atm..

I agree Farah could be higher but as I say there are probably 2 reasons why he isn't...

Blame the public if you want to blame someone, not the BBC's fault who they vote for.

I voted for Alistair Brownlee but am happy with Andy Murray winning.

They showed the Olympics and the Euros so there was plenty coverage of some of the other contenders.

I would have gone for England rugby as Team of the Year. Leicester were the team of the first half of 2016 but they've been fairly rubbish since May.

Not that is fixed. The few sports that are on Terresterial TV are the ones people connect to and vote in numbers. Thats why wont see any Cricket players, boxers etc win.

They've been fairy rubbish domestically, however their performance in the Champions League has been pretty spectacular. Better than any of the 'big teams' have managed.

It's what happens when you rely on a public vote, I presume you are a supporter of Michael Sheen?

Why do people on here have this insane idea that Olympians are more worthy of winning awards than any other sportsmen?

By the way Murray is an Olympian too. I voted for Brownlee but Murray is a worthy winner. As for Leicester, well they deserve it too. It's an extraordinary achievement and story in this day an age. 5000-1 shot, that's some odds.

Andy Murray has lost just 4 tennis matches since May. He's won Wimbledon, an Olympic gold, the World Tour Finals and reached world number one. In an era where he competes alongside three of the best of all time.

Achievements alone, he was miles ahead before they started. I don't get the Farah hate, he seems a good bloke to me. I voted for Alastair Brownlee but was expecting Andy to win

I don't understand how, in prime time television, with free voting on the website, it's possible for there to be less than 1 million votes, only 54k for mo? He deserved at least number 2/3 considering his amazing achievement this year...

People don't vote in General Elections and Referendums. What would possess them to do so in matters of considerably less importance especially when the winner is nailed on? It would be an extraordinary public vote type show indeed in which as much as 30% of the viewers voted. Some I'm sure, over the years, will have had votes numbered in hundreds.

Two years in a row, three overall.

Andy competed at the Olympics and won gold.

Possibly its because you only get 30 minutes to vote and to vote online you have to register first and this year Murray was the outstanding favourite

That is the governing bodies fault for chasing money over coverage.

Greed rules in sport as it does elsewhere. Which is why there's so much more sport being played now at the highest level than ever before - companies like Sky TV have seemingly bottomless pockets & endless hours of airtime to fill. Will the bubble eventually burst?

Why do they feel the need to hold this in massive arenas The NEC will, always be.....Gladiators

sycophants ready....Salt and Linekar ready......3...2...1.....
Gladiators was the NIA, not the NEC.

Think the result was unsurprising, I would have liked Ali Brownlee but would rather both brothers had been nominated. Pleased for Skelton reaching the top 3 though.

The tribute section really saddened me this year, there looked to be a shockingly high number of younger people

Wonderful irony in the fact the winner of BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR - a Mr. Andy Murray - has zero personality. If anyone was born without a discernible personality it's him! Class tennis player, though.
