The recent political unrest, snoopers charter, impending war, and strikes on rail and post offices should highlight the risk of relying solely on online streams.

When Scottish power are on strike and Russia has bombed us, or terrorists or strike actions kill wifi, everyone will dig out their old CDs and physical media and FM / MW radios.

As for the buy vs rent argument. When you are 80 everything you own will be thrown in a skip when you are six feet under, or sold to pay for your care. Life is short and fast - travel light.
Put everything online, then lose your internet connection......and your in big trouble.

we have already seen attacks on some services (inc gaming online platforms), individual sites, as well as on ISPs (twice on Talk Talk) - and this can and does inc peoples details being stolen as well. We have already had the warning signs....I don't want to scare anyone, but IMO its only a matter of time. And I wouldn't rule out someone doing a cyber attack on our national power grid - they recently experienced this in Ukraine as part of the ongoing conflict.

If the national power grid goes down, I don't think Spotify access is going to be high on my list of priorities!

Water, gas, electricity, sewage and waste disposal, supermarkets. They're all things we now depend on to live our normal lives in the 21st century in the first world. They're all centrally provided and/or require a huge and complex supporting infrastructure. And they're all largely taken for granted.

The vast majority of us don't dig wells, collect wood to burn, dig cesspits or grow or forage for our own food these days. How many of us could survive if any of those, especially water, were permanently disconnected or unavailable?

We used to look things up in encyclopaedias and other physical books, either in a local library or personally owned.

Add online "data" to the list of first world, 21st century necessities.

Shouldn't be a problem.

If the worst happens, just order some survivalist books from Amazon.

Oh, hang on.....
