He sells novelties, right.

When people type novelties into the Google search box they DON'T type Purple whale.

So why didn't he just call his company Courtney's Novelties???

Purple Whale is random. It also means nothing except perhaps conservation.

if he is a man who is called Courtney, then I am not surprised he has difficulty with names

Haha. I did wonder who 'she' was when the series started.

When people type novelties into the Google search box they DON'T type blue whale.

So why didn't he just call his company Courtney's Novelties???

Blue Whale is random. It also means nothing except perhaps conservation.
Moonpig doesn't relate to buying cards, Yodel doesn't relate to deliveries, Gousto doesn't relate to food - I could give you many more. It doesn't matter what the name of the company is, it is what the person is searching for and the optimisation of the website to include the right tags that will lead you to the right website. The name is irrelevant.

Search engine optimisation doesn't work like that.

For instance if you actually google Novelty gifts then most of the things that come up don't mention the word Novelty.

Everyone has remembered the name and that`s half the battle with branding. Novelties by Courtney sounds Victorian; at least his choice was quirky and modern.

It's a complete joke that anyone would enter this process without a name or two up their sleeve for their company, and would waste most of their first day on the final task trying to think of one.

More fakery from the BBC

It was basically Karthik's idea and he got no credit for it!

More likely the BBC caught both finalists off guard when it said they could not use their existing company names.

It was in fact completely Karthik's idea, if Karthik hadn't been there to prompt Courtney to blurt out his favourite animal and colour without thinking, Courtney might have been stuck on a business name for a long, long time still.

Basically Karthik saved Courtney's ass and got zero credit for it.

Names that are a colour and an animal are really popular. The naming bit seemed kind of staged. He'd have buggered it up if he'd said blue, wouldn't he?

Yeah.
This is like the porn star name game. My novelty company name would be red penguin!

He should have named it Wet Lettuce, then everyone would associate it with him.

Agreed about Karthik - he was invaluable to Courtney in the final.

His company already had a name, I'm not sure he was aware that he was going to be asked to give it a different name.

All five of the previous winners launched businesses with new names, and at least three had to deliver the new name as part of the task. That's the prize - start a company with Lord Sugar (even if it does build entirely on what you've already been doing).

To all you people who are trying to justify Courtney's reason to call his novelties business Purple Whale.

Why can't you accept Courtney's Novelties is a better name. And Google does work if you have the name of what you sell in your website name.

I know, from experience.

I'd rather call a hair transplant business, 'www.newhair. com - than trying to be clever and calling the business redkettles.com

Indeed. There again, this is not the first time in this series I've wondered if the candidates have even watched The Apprentice before (pace Natalie who admitted she had not).

I'm amazed they spent so long on it -- and every year in episode one spend ages naming their teams even though there is a good chance they will be transferred to the other side before long.

Most names do not matter. It is Mr Kipling not Mr BestCakesInTheWholeSupermarket. So far as I can see, most of our leading companies have names that are made up or remember long-dead founders, like Ford or Rolls-Royce. Obviously that is betting without Amstrad.

Courtneys Novelties is a terrible name. One of the biggest selling, if not the biggest, novelties companies is called Firebox by the way.

Do you really need a list of hugely successful businesses that have names that are nothing to do with what they sell?

Yes and I think the trend is more and more that the brand name has bugger all to do with the product. Clothing brands in particular are given the most bizarre names like Boohoo or Miss Pap. Alana put her name in because she was part of the brand, but nobody is interested in exactly who designed novelty items like the F*ck Off doormat.
