Sir Lenny Henry - A Life On The Screen - BBC2, 21.00.
I'm hoping it will be a South Bank Show style spoof with Desmond Olivier Dingleberry conducting the fawning, but I fear it will be a deadly serious high calibre BBC brown nosing.
I like the guy but his talent is sometimes exaggerated , he does have friends in high places, re the knighthoodship. |

Wow! Bitter much? Or perhaps jealous. Not sure which. And a nicely subtle allegation too.

I enjoyed it. Lenny has been on telly pretty much my whole viewing life (going back to Tiswas) and it was a nice look back.
Lenny has had a fantastic career. A well deserved tribute. |

Saved by diversity agendas, just as his unfunny act began to wear very thin.

I thought it was great. I was riveted from the start. I do like him though, so that helps.
I wouldn't watch an hour about Jack Whitehall for instance. |

I am a fan of Lenny, and considering the people and projects he has worked with/on (outside of comedy) he deserves some kind of documentry. He meant a bit to a lot of british black kids back in the day and his importance of some one looking like him back in the day is and was important.
When it comes to comedy....i do not think he very over rated looking back but when you had people like jim davidson doing crap impressions of Carribeans it was a releif to have Lenny doing it better representation. But as a personailty i think there is a reason he has lasted. I have not seen what angle BBC2 will take with this but i cannot imagine it would be 70% based on Lenny "the comedian" (maybe wrong). But i do rate him as a actor. PS. when it comes to hate from some people (not talking about the usual racist) i think it seemed to have grown around the time he broke up with Dawn French and of course when he stopped being the "compliant" black man and became more out spoken. Also there have been a couple of apperances where he has been a host where we can all see he was past it. |

l can never understand why some people hate him so much, when he just did straight comedy he was far funnier than any of the present generation of unfunny stand-up "comedians" even if many are multi-millionaires.

I'm very fond of him (maybe it's a Black Country thing/no pun intended/ but when he mentions Dud-lie it always cracks me up)
I remember him from the beginning, and I enjoyed how the programme showed him developing, particularly his interest in Shakespeare etc Great bloke.imo |

Avoided this like the plague. Don't like the guy, he's not funny and shouldn't have been knighted, along with so many other non-entities including some sportsmen and others.

Excellent documentary. Helping launch a charity that has raised so much plus his other work is deserving of a documentary.
Sister once sat next to a dodgy looking guy on the bus with his hood up looking at the floor. The bus set off, he took his hood off and it was Lenny who then launched into his Delbert Wilkins routine for half an hour. Driver stopped to get an autograph. |

I love Lenny Henry and we all need to remember he was the main organiser of
Comic Relief when it was watchable. He always comes across as being genuine and wears his heart on his sleeve. You only have to refer back to any of his stories involving kids in Africa etc to see what type of person he is. I for one was delighted when he received his knighthood for services to charity. Well done Lenny keep up the good work. |

I saw the description for the programme in my EPG and it said that it was an exploration of his 'incredible' work.

I did enjoy it, but I was surprised the The Lenny Henry Show had apparently been going up to 2012!
I have absolutely no recollection of it after early 90's. |

I seem to remember that Jim Davidson did a humorous impression of a "Caribbean" that was based on a friend of his. No worse than Lenny Henry doing crap impressions of non-Caribbeans. Neither of them were supposed to be accurate impressions as John Culshaw or Alistair McGowan do and perhaps more akin to slapstick comedy.
Having said that, Lenny was guilty of 'selling out' during his early career ( New Faces etc) because he was basically trying to ingratiate himself with predominantly white audiences by demeaning not only himself but his 'blackness' in a way that made all black people figures of fun.Not at all good and something he later talked of being ashamed of. Decent bloke and very good career when you factor in the serious acting and the charity work but tend to agree that a knighthood is OTT on balance but almost all of them are these days. |
