Does anyone else have this problem. Although we have a call blocker on my telephone one number keeps ringing every day twice a day now it's 3 times a day. It only rings once then cuts of so the call blocker is working but it's still annoying. Any ideas what l can do.

Register on TPS and then report them if they carry on.

My BT8500 is set up so that it doesn't ring at all if a blocked* number calls. Can your phone be set up the same way?

*In this context, "blocked" corresponds to "not expressly permitted"

I've found TPS to be about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Answer it and have a massive go at them. I had this a while back and when they started talking responded with "are you the people who keep ringing and ringing my number? I have had to unplug my phone because of you..." and then THEY HUNG UP on me!! Rude. Never called back though.

They have numbers on a list from somewhere and once they realise you are not going to bite they'll cross your number off.

You can sign up to TPS as well but I've been on that for years and it makes no difference in some cases.

Sounds like a fault with the unit, unless there is some small maximum of numbers that can be blocked.

Answer it and speak in a language which sounds foreign but unintelligible.

Yes they do.

Their latest nonsense (BRITISH GAS) is asking for my postcode and date of birth as the only means to stop future calls - otherwise the calls will continue.

I give them nothing.

TPS is fine if you are dealing with legitimate companies who play by the rules. It has zero effect on scammers who don't give a toss for the law.

Plus a scammer is more than likely to either withhold their number or send a totally fictitious one to display on your phone. So reporting the number could well be a waste of time as well.

Unfortunately, either devices that plug into your phone line to police your calls and block the unwanted junk, or a phone with that function built in, are the only real way to deal with these people. Either that or finding out where they live and sending round some large gentlemen with baseball bats to educate them in the error of their ways

Let all calls go to answerphone and turn the ringer off.

It should not be up to the person at the receiving end to have to block calls. It should be made illegal to cold call.

My phone is there for MY benefit not for some idiotic low-life company to tell me about a new boiler or a PEP claim or a some crappy double glazing company. It is impossible to get back to them or their managers because they use unavailable numbers of if there is a number it is unobtainable when you ring them back.

I feel the same way, but for baseball bats read a pair of fully loaded Tornado GR4s .

Sadly, it wouldn't help for call centres based outside the country.

Now, if the onus was placed on the telephone company not to connect such calls, with each one that gets through giving the subscriber a discount of their bill...

Agreed, they don't just want stopping but blowing into oblivion, never to trade again.

Read the section on CLI (10) in the PDF document linked to in this post

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...0#post84927090

Seems Ofcom are proposing that the CLI presented to recipients should be a diallable number. And the telecoms companies should block any calls that don't present a real number (for want of a better description).

See sections 10.29 and 10.39 and 10.40 in particular.

Might not end all such calls but looks like a step in the right direction.

Registered with TPS and keep getting automated "Now that winter is here...." calls. Don't know what they're trying to sell as that's as far as I let it get.

Cold calls drive me mad and I am supposedly registered not to receive them. One called last week - I couldn't understand a word they were saying (non-English accent), explained I was hard of hearing and could they slow down and speak clearly only to be told that if I was deaf I had no business picking up my phone! I had great pleasure in telling them to eff off.

My biggest hatred is reserved for the scam Microsoft calls. I play the doddery old idiot (not difficult) until they are about ready to scream with irritation at my stupidity and then tell them I have Linux

I am also getting calls from Sky offering half price Sky Sports. I am not into football at all, but they use football as their selling point. I am assuming they have a lot of football on Sky Sports.

I've never had one of those (not sure what I did to annoy them ) but if I did I wonder how long I could string them along asking where the Windows button is, getting them to describe it's appearance & location over and again, before I ask if the little icon in the top left corner that looks like a piece of fruit with a bite taken out of it is this elusive Windows button?

I worked for two cold calling companies which the job centre forced me to do, ok it was a job but my god did I hate it. Indeed you do have a list of numbers to ring and you do your best sales pitch, but you evidently piss off the people you are calling. I lasted a week in both jobs because I never made enough sales, I felt god awful that I was hounding these people and my heart just wasn't in it. On the last job I agreed with someone on the phone who said what I was doing should be illegal, I said this isn't me at all. Obviously calls were recorded and I was let go, I didnt even care! I think in that type of job you have to not care to succeed but I did care and felt really uneasy harrassing these poor people. Now shoes on the other foot when I get these sorts of calls I make the point that im not interested and tell them to strike me off their list, sometimes they do sometimes they dont.

OP, If you're getting a single ring it sounds like you have 2 telephones connected in parallel. One with a call blocker and a telephone(s) behind it, and the other one with a telephone but no call blocker in front of it. This will result in a single ring on the phone that connects directly to line without the call blocker.

I keep getting those and another automated message about cleaning my oven. They drive me insane as the messages are left on the answer machine so you have to start to listen before clearing them off.

I registered with the TPS many years ago, but due to the amount of automated messages I'm getting I thought I would do it again, but you can't. I didn't know if you were supposed to renew it every 5yrs or so.

You only need to renew with TPS if you change your phone number or are a company.

You can check if your number is still registered here

TPS is useless IME. Since I bought BT phones with inbuilt call guardian my phone hardly ever rings now since I've set it to block all withheld numbers and international calls.

It also stops recorded calls since, in order to get my phone to ring the caller has to press a button and announce themselves.

Best thing I've bought in a long time.

I also use the Truecaller app on my mobile - it's not as good but worthwhile nonetheless.

It might have been a placebo affect but I found registering on the TPS helped reduce (but not stop) a lot of the nonsense calls. At least that was my experience when setting it up for family/friends. It only takes 5mins and doesn't cost anything so I would still recommend it.

In my own case I gave up on my landline phone and unplugged it, since even being on the TPS can't help you when you are being called by robots. Can appreciate this isn't a viable option for those with limited or non-existant mobile phone coverage though.

l dld similar to you. l still pay my line rental, but unplugged my phone in the summer, and only now use my mobile.
lt ridiculous that we can't use our phones the way we want to because of constant nuisance calls
