Does it tend to float around your line of vision, usually whizzing off sideways after a few seconds? If so it's called a floater (believe it or not). It's caused by the quite normal breakdown of the lining of the eye and is perfectly normal.

If it's a pronounced black dot which remains in one place you need to see a doctor urgently.

You should get it checked by an optician
I had black spots, floating in front of my eye, and lots of light flashes
It turned out to be vitreous displacement, where the jelly part of the eyeball pulls away
It is often an age thing, and very common
It is not as bad as a detached retina, but if very bad, could lead to it

Not sure why you've asked on here? Go to a doctor and optometrist straight away.

When I was in my mid twenties I remember sitting on the loo at work and seeing sparkling flashes of light dancing around on the toilet door. I seem to remember looking it up and that one possibility was that it was migraine without the headache. This is supposedly possible, but it only lasted for about half a minute.

^ This and an appointment should be made first thing tomorrow morning so as to determine what the potential causes are.

That sounds more like it was just a really enormous poo.

Why put off until later what you can do now?

Something unexplained like this ought to be looked at without delay in case the cause is serious. I'd suggest making an appointment with an optician tomorrow morning and seeing that optician before the end of the week.

What did they do about it?
I was referred to a consultant, monitored, and after about a year it stabilised with no treatment.
Unless it goes on to develop a retinal detachment there isn't anything surgical that can be done
It is common in older people
I was advised not to do any heavy lifting, and if it worsened dramatically, to go to A and
I got used to the floaters, and occasional light flashes

Odd fact.. Straining on the loo can do odd things to your blood pressure. But I get the migraine 'jaggies' without other migraine symptoms as well. Usually starts with a small rainbow dot & then expands and goes.

Usual DS health advice applies though, ie go see a decent optician and get them to check it. They're the experts, we're not..

It does make me wonder how long it was before I was diagnosed with high blood pressure during a routine check at work. I had an incredibly stressful job at the time and I sometimes wonder how high it might have been getting before I was put on treatment. I can imagine how it could produce those symptoms.

OP get going on this NOW... I had to wait three months before I got my appointment at the eye hospital after a referral from my optician to my GP. In my case I knew the issue, Bests so wasnt worried, I just wanted to get registered severely partially sighted and get access to their low vision unit.

What you describe could be any thing and needs attention NOW!
