I have filled a small black bag with loads of pairs of socks. They have all been worn but have plenty of wear left in them. There are also a few pairs of gloves and woolly hats in there. I was hoping to post then abroad to some where like Calais or Somalia where they are in dire need of warm socks etc. Unfortunately most of the charities are requesting new items which I don't have. Does anyone know of a direct address where I can post them and they will actually be allocated to those who need them?

If any are actually made of silver then I expect they'll be gratefully received

Otherwise I think charities would prefer new socks, given how cheap they are and that they can get donations of new ones pretty easily (also saves any hassle about cleanliness/sorting/checking condition etc). Some might collect old clothing for the recycling value?

The capital of Somalia, Mogadishu has a latitude of 2 deg N ie virtually on the Equator. Not much dire need of woolly hats, gloves or warm socks there. Maybe send some fans or air con units. Also, I hear the Calais jungle has been shut down.

I guess you're SOL. You might find the odd frozen person on the streets of the UK though . . .

you could try share africa, they take direct donations and if they cannot use them they`ll probably have some alternative suggestions for you.

A few of the recycling centres near me do have the bins where you can donate your old clothes. I think it's Oxfam who collects them or something.

Sorry no, haven't a clue. The Red Cross might know of an address, but if you take your socks to an actual shop of theirs they would just throw them into the rags / recycling bags.
They are ultra fussy and aren't allowed to sell used underwear which includes socks, only brand new unworn, with labels attached or still in original packaging. Even ladies swimming costumes are thrown unless they have the protective strip still on the gusset, no matter how good a condition they are.

That does seem such a terrible waste. I'll probably find somewhere in the UK who could make use of them. By the way, what SOL mean, please.

You could hand them out to homeless people in your area. Maybe take them to a shelter that does Christmas dinner for homeless people.

A lot of overseas charities now prefer cash. It's a lot cheaper for them to send money abroad than tones of donations and their spending in poor areas helps the local economies.

Even food banks here say that money is better than food as it allows them to source a balance range of foodstuffs and household basics themselves rather than random tins that people find lurking at the back of their cupboards.

And it's not much of an incentive syphoning off used socks and out of date Rice Krispies.
🙁

I run a charity shop and yes used socks, undies and the like go straight into the rag bins, some of them are so disgusting I wont touch them unless I am wearing a mask and gloves, seriously crusty gussets and manky socks urghhh

there are still many that ask for and take clothes and so on.

a lot of people worldwide knit and crochet desperately needed items like baby hats, jumpers and blankets to send abroad too.

When I posted my OP, I had no idea that it would provoke such silly responses and comments. Neither did I realise that people donate filthy stuff to charity. I suppose I shall have to put them in the rag bin. It just seems so silly when there are homeless people who'd appreciate a pair of CLEAN warm socks. Thanks for the few sensible suggestions, tho.

Yep.
One side is still clean, must be plenty of people about who are not as picky about these things as me, shame to waste it
