To each his own, I'm not a dedicated sports fan, although originating in East London, but domiciled for years in South London, I still like to check on West Ham's results.
I digress, for me, having spent a great deal of time in the U.S. in the nineties, the home run race between Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Sammy Sosa, of the Chicago Cubs was electrifying in the 1998 season.
It finished with McGwire hitting 70, and Sosa 66, but I always rooted for McGwire, he was a great ball player, and a sporting gentleman.
Last I heard he was a bench coach for the San Diego Padres.

Paula's marathon World Record is the most outstanding record on the books being nearly 3 minutes faster than any other woman has ever run.

Can't see any other record as good as this one. It may not be beaten for another few decades.

She must then be considered the GOAT.

I'd definitely go for Don Bradman. No modern cricketer is going to get a batting average like he did.

More modern day equivalents would be people like Garfield Sobers, Brian Lara, Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve/Mark Waugh, Jacques Kallis, Ian Botham, Chris Gayle, Cory Anderson, AB de Villiers etc.

Tennis: Roger Federer or Pete Sampras.

Formula 1: Michael Schumacher.

The only four sports I find very easy to say who the greatest are -

Rally - Sebastien Loeb
Athletics sprint - Usain Bolt
Swimming - Michael Phelps
Snowboard Half-pipe - Shaun White

But a lot of other sports have so many possibles and 'clash of eras', like boxing, football and tennis. You know, the usual argument of "would such and such have been able to compete in today's game" etc.

Senna would have raced rings around Schumacher in equal cars.

Yes, agreed on Don Bradman. Playing on uncovered pitches as well.

Over all sports I would go for Michael Jordan. Best Brit I would go for Daley Thompson.

Lovely thought to bring sporting animals into the equation.

For me, (even though I was a young child) Flat race horses such as Mill Reef, Nijinsky, and a little known superstar, Brigadier Gerard were just wonderful and mesmerising to watch. And for the Steeplechaser's, Red Rum.

For the humans, Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, Pele, George Best and probably a few more that I can't think of right now.

Why ? what made what he did any greater than what others did in their sport ?
