Depends what you mean by greatest really.
If we're going by trophies then i'd say Ryan Giggs on 36 would take some beating.

Jim Thorpe or Bo Jackson.

Dieon Sanders has an argument too, being the only man to play in both the Superbowl and the World Series.

Any multi-event (heptathlotn or decathlon) winner too, but Daley Thompson comes to mind specifically.

: I preferred Giant Haystacks myself

I am not a fan of boxing but I would say Mohammed Ali could be classified as the best.

Even as a kid (About 4) I never liked him I just found him boring I preferred Kendo Nagasaki- Robbie Brookside-Les Kellet ect.

WOS Wrestling is coming back on ITV for a few specials starting New Years Eve and if all goes well enough a full new series later in the year.

Paula's marathon World Record is the most outstanding record on the books being nearly 3 minutes faster than any other woman has ever run.

Can't see any other record as good as this one. It may not be beaten for another few decades.

She must then be considered the GOAT.
My vote is Beryl Burton. As far as I know the only woman to hold a national record in any major sport that beat the current men's.

When she started emptying her bowels during races she lost this accolade

How could either be classed as the greatest sportsman ever when they play in a game that is pretty much localised to their own country?

Really? Lets just look at one sport, Darts. Phil Taylor has won over 90 ( individual) trophies so by your logic he is the best ever.

I'm more for Stone Cold Steve Austin.

He might only be joint 5th for number of world title reigns (6, along with Hulk Hogan), but he was in the toughest era for competition. Having to contend with the likes of the Rock, Brett Hart, the Undertaker, Kane, Triple H, Mankind AND Kurt Angle, and still come out on top time and time again.... man, that is some doing!

Japan and Cuba, at the very least, would argue against baseball being "localised" to the US. As would Toronto Blue Jays fans.

Both Jackson and sanders could have played just about any sport, thats the point. Sanders was also an olympic level sprinter according to his college coach.

Thorpe played various sports professionally and was an olympic decathlon medalist.

Perhaps the accolade should actually go to the WWE scriptwriters?

Given that at the time they employed Vince Russo, I think not.

You cant compare people from different sports, or eras to come up with a greatest of all time. it's impossible.

There are a huge number of great people across the ages, and opinions will be formed based on favourites.

However, if we are talking about someone who stands out from the crowd, because of ability, and personality, then Ali is the man.

Someone asked earlier what was so different about him, which is an astonishing question. You need to look at his history, and it tells the story. Not perfect, but he was a one off.

If you're going for NFL players with multi sport success then I'm surprised you missed out 'Bullet' Bob Hayes.

Olympic 100m gold medalist; Olympic 4x100 gold medalist; former 100m world record holder; Superbowl winner, Pro Football Hall of Famer.

It's all academic though because Bradman is still the greatest.
