You cant compare people from different sports, or eras to come up with a greatest of all time. it's impossible.
I agree completely. In addition, trying to compare individual sports with team sports is an exercise in futility.

There are lots of great sportsmen and women, and I'd add the squash player Jahangir Khan to the mix.

Greatest skateboarder - Tony Hawk
The only interesting thing he ever did was that book where he went round Ireland with a fridge.

I'm more for Stone Cold Steve Austin.

He might only be joint 5th for number of world title reigns (6, along with Hulk Hogan), but he was in the toughest era for competition. Having to contend with the likes of the Rock, Brett Hart, the Undertaker, Kane, Triple H, Mankind AND Kurt Angle, and still come out on top time and time again.... man, that is some doing!
This is a thread about sport, not entertainment

you can't hold that against him seeing as he was a middleweight
A good big un will always beat a good little un.

I propose C.B. Fry.

unless it's Joe Frazier

tbh Ali and Robinson would probably be on a par if Ali didn't lose his best years, though of course Ali stands out because of his politics and the fact he was also the worlds greatest comedian

Ali could create excitement like none other.

he could, though Ali even admitted Robsinson was the best p4p ever, in a rare showing of humility

Yes but some have the storylines wrote for them others are just given the basic idea and who wins/loses (And sometimes only find that out just as they are walking out the curtain) and work out everything else themselves Inc promos and backstage stuff.

Of course some also have creative control (They can refuse to lose if they don't want to)
Hogan and Nash were notorious for that in WCW.

I think Jessie Owens has always been someone who stands out to me. A black guy winning against the full might of the aryan nazi master race.

Bob Nudd - in 1991, he received the most votes ever in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award but was denied victory by the BBC

A question that will be impossible to get a consensus from, but people like Jesse Owens must surely be up there?

When you consider the environment he excelled in, that's pretty amazing and something very few athletes have had to endure since....and not just whilst in Germany, either. The way in which his own country treated him was pretty awful.
Indeed.

Hitler aswell was trying to promote the utterly insane notion that aryans were superior and people like Jesse were subhuman.

Along came Jesse to the 1936 Olympics and showed that right up.

Being great being the greatest... when other greats are also around. That is what makes the best of the best sports people of all time!

Some era's are quite week, they have less overall major opponents to contend with.

My nomination is me. I may not be a household name but I was a real sporting all-rounder in that I played football, cricket, rugby, hockey, tennis, table tennis, golf, amateur wrestling, chess, backgammon, cluedo, scrabble, subbuteo(various disciplines),mousetrap and ker-plunk. And I recorded wins in all of them. Except chess. And I never resorted to aggression or foul play. Except at chess. Or took illegal drugs. Apart from that one chess game and I'm still disputing that with FIDE.
So I can definitely say that I am a great role model.
Except to young chess players.

She's 11th - Navratilova has the most titles.

Then comes Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Margaret Court, Shriver, Casals, Graf, Novotna, Hingis, Sanchez Vicario and then Serena Williams. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis...n_the_Open_Era

I always remember reading about him being a Barnados child. I know that's irrelevant to the thread but it was interesting.
