I see the adverts have started for Danny Mac's new show Sleepless.
I am one of those who maintained that he wasn't as 'professional ' as was being maintained as he was only an understudy for a non dancing part in Wicked HOWEVER this new musical and dance show must have already been signed and sealed probably before Strictly started so yes, he is very much a professional!!

Who says there is dancing in the show? There are a lot of musicals without much dancing, Les Mis, Blood Brothers etc.

I still maintain he is not a professional dancer, but a pro actor and singer. Have you seen any footage of him dancing before Strictly?

Don't think Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan danced in the original.

On the official site dance isn't mentioned once.

Whether or not it was supposed to have dance numbers in it, given the headliner it would certainly be a commercially savvy thing to add some now.

I see it says on the site 'prior to the West End star cast to be announced' - does that mean Danny and Carley may not be in the West End run? I was quite surprised about Carley, as I read an interview with Kimberley Walsh where she seemed to be hoping to star in it after doing the work shopping (I think Carley is probably a better choice though).

Good point.

Realistically it would be sensible to see how they do in the previews before the West End opening.

Interesting. Looks like it's another attempt to produce a musical version of the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan blockbuster - the first faded and died a few years ago, and I assume the producer still holds the rights and is trying to resuscitate it and distance it from the first flop.

I think Danny will need all his musical talents to get this one off the runway. There's a nice Harry Connick Song, "A Wink and a Smile" from the film, but these things never reappear in the musical versions.

Isn't this what the previews are for?

Oh for goodness sake, he's entitled to take on whatever work is offered to him! And as for whether it was sorted before Strictly started, unless you can point to any evidence of that then you don't know. It was being workshopped by Kimberley Walsh as recently as a few months ago, so I highly doubt anything was decided until the last few weeks. Plus it's a new musical so no-one knows how much dancing there will be in it (and let's face it, Sleepless in Seattle isn't going to be ballroom in any event!).

And of course there is no rule as to the level of dance experience a celeb can have - and people seem to very conveniently forget that when it doesn't suit their argument against good dancers...

Most stage musicals, don't require the leads to dance to as high a standard as ballroom/latin competitions. There may be a bit of "waltzing", but not much beyond a basic 1,2,3... 1,2,3 step. Certainly no need to concentrate on rise and fall, heel leads and fleckerls required to score well in Strictly.

Danny has stage experience and natural dance ability - I say that as one with stage experience and no natural dance ability!! - Strictly has been a fantastic showcase for him and he's clearly using it as a stepping stone and he'd be crazy or lazy not to! But there's no way on earth you can say he's a professional dancer.

My own guess would be that it was not sorted, although I have no evidence that way either!

Jay McGuiness is currently starring in a musical version of another Tom Hanks film, Big. The same person is behind Sleepless in Seattle (Michael Rose). Apparently he decided to invite Jay for audition after seeing him on Biggins Buggy on ITT. This time around he might have been talent spotting from the first Strictly show!

This new show seems to be following the same pattern as Big - Theatre Royal Plymouth production, then on to Dublin prior to West End.

Anyway, good luck to Danny. I wasn't supporting him particularly on Strictly, but he seems a decent enough guy and an excellent dancer, although I know nothing about his singing and acting skills.

He was punished for it already anyway, he was in the DO and did not win. Yes, he made mistakes in QS, but if he were the favourite it would not matter.

I wouldn't have thought 'sleepless' would feature much dancing, if any? Not all musicals do.

Some (not all) West End musicals I've been to that have included dance, have had dancers that were absolutely pathetic. The price for a West End ticket should ensure a decent standard, sadly that is not the case.

Oh for goodness sake. He is an ACTOR. It is not out of place for him to do West End.
So many XF alumni are in West End....does that mean they are professional dancers too?

The show is over. Ore won. I think it's time to move on.

Danny is an actor. He has never described himself or been referred to as 'a dancer'. He just has an innate talent that SCD brought out in him.

Kimberley Walsh just had a baby, didn't she? Maybe she didn't want to go back to work so soon. A musical is a pretty big commitment!

I hope it goes well for Danny & Carley. I would be surprised if this musical has much dancing, especially for the leads. I mean, think of the tone of the movie - if anything, it will be a bit of arm-wafting and twirling around!
