Ofcom to make Calling Line Identification free
Ofcom is proposing to make telcos provide Calling Line Identification free of charge.
![]() This is long overdue because without CLI it's not possible to recognise nuisance calls before answering them. Ofcom is also proposing another long overdue change, that telcos should block calls with invalid CLIs, widely used by nuisance callers. Predictably, Ofcom's proposals don't go nearly far enough. In order to be effective against nuisance calls, they should also oblige telcos to provide Anonymous Call Rejection, Choose to Refuse and Automatic Call Trace free of charge. These services cost telcos nothing to provide because telephone exchanges already have them installed, the telcos just need to make them available. Ofcom should also make it possible for subscribers to block calls where the CLI is unavailable, not merely those where it is withheld. Needless to say, whenever Ofcom appears to help the consumer there's always a sting in the tail. Ofcom is now proposing to drop the requirement that telcos provide tone dialling, so presumably telcos could start charging extra for this as a way of clawing back the revenue lost by making CLI free of charge !
