This is driving me scatty, I have been trying for 3 days now to install Malwarebytes, and, each time I try I get the message "Unable to execute file in temp directory, setup aborted error 5"

I have tried all the suggestions by Microsoft i.e security settings in the Temp Folder
creating a new file on drive C called temp
Changed the enviromental variables to C: drive, but still get message.
And running the exc file as Administrator.

Can't find anything else to try, really didn't want to restore my PC from a backup...

Do you suspect that you have a malware infection? It could be blocking the install.

Try in Safe Mode.

I assume you obtained the installer for Malwarebytes from the official Malwarebytes website? If you got it from some other source then it might not be 100% kosher. If it is a genuine version of Malwarebytes then you may have some malware on your PC blocking it from installing.

If that is the case try their Chameleon product

https://www.malwarebytes.com/chameleon/

This disguises the installer so hopefully whatever is blocking Malwarebytes is fooled and lets you install it properly.

Are you logged into an Administrator account?

Try re-downloading it.

Then log off the internet, disable anti-virus andright click on the setup file and choose "Run as Administrator".Enable anti-virus and log back on.

Not sure why this works, perhaps someone can explain? I have two computers one of which has Malwarebytes installed, so, copied the Malwarebytes download to a stick, put stick in other computer, and Malwarebytes installed from the file on the stick

Windows can do all sorts of weird stuff with File and Folder permissions, not all of which is obvious.

Quite possible that wherever you downloaded the file to had file/folder permissions set such that you could read files but not execute them for example. It can sometimes be a real pain in the wotsits trying to work out where the permissions have been set and how to change them.

Sometimes I've found it impossible to let Windows give me permission to some files on my own computer! If you can't run anything at all from this temp folder then the easiest solution might be to create a new folder for downloaded files and point your web browser at that instead.

Of course there is still the possibility you have some malware blocking the running of the installer but it is too thick to stop you running the installer from a different drive/folder to where your downloads normally live so missed you running it from the USB drive.

How old is the computer? Is it something to do with the problem which I had? See my thread about "The application.........". It was to do with EES2 instruction set. The extra download from MWB fixed it perfectly.
