Don't know if anybody else saw this tribute to jean or not
But near the end MLV said I can say I was in CS when it was great show with great cast
Hmm
Wonder how that went down with current cast particularly the younger members.

Well to be fair it's what most people think. You only have to look at old clips to see the style of acting and the quality of the scripts are way above what we have today.

He was being bluntly honest, which is refreshing in the PC World we belong in.

I cant remember watching it back with Jean Alexander in it, but have been told so much about Hilda, Stan, Annie Walker, Ena Sharples

You cant see people talking in like 50 years time, about, Fiz, Chesney, Dev and so on.

There is only 2 current characters who i can see being remembered, in many years to come, one being Ken, Possibly Rita, but Rita is only a possibly

A touch of irony considering how poor his acting is.

Corrie used to be on twice a week - enough time for rehearsals and redoing bits

Its now on 5 times a week - soon to be six

He is right.

I am sure some of the current cast would be inclined to agree, especially when you consider some get utter dross to work with, or some get nothing to do at all.

Yep.

I don't think the show will ever be properly on the up, and it is probably time we all accepted this.

He is spot on. We all watched the show last night and commented how shitty the show is now compared to then. The quality was far superior, it's a different show. The characters were also more likable and someone you can get behind and be fond of. Now I hate all of them even the old timers as they have changed so much.

By all accounts, when the late Tony Warren first created Corrie, he fought hard for it to be gritty realism tempered by humour. In recent years, it's gone so far from that vision that I found it hard to believe he was still involved with Corrie.

But that's not what he said.

He said: "Thankfully I had a good few years working with the best, and she was the best".

Nothing there for anyone to take offence to, surely?

Exactly, the original OP completely mis-quoted him.

He said she was the best not the whole cast were the best - there is a difference.

It just means that he's worked with some of the best actors that Corrie has had - like Jean Alexander. He said nothing about the current cast.

Not sure why you're so determined to read so much more into an innocent remark made to honour the memory of a fine actress.

Now it's ridiculous humour tempered with gritty sensationalism

That is true, but I do think that Corrie was vastly better then...

I do think it's improved lately and is more enjoyable than it was in the recent past, but God that is the perfect description of it now and the sad thing is that it was always the show that prided itself on quality. It's a shame that basically ITV are killing the golden goose for short term gain.

Even if he had said that (which he didn't) he'd have been undeniably right.
In those days it was unmissable. Not now. I can have it on but not take any notice of it.

And the short-term gain isn't even good sadly I don't understand why it is so difficult for the producers to give Corrie engaging storylines.

I sat and watched the clips of Stan & Hilda with my Dad, who is no longer a soap viewer.
We laughed, we cried. We reminisced about Coronation Street as it once was.

If Michael Le Vell was hinting that he thinks the show's best days are behind it then he is hardly alone in that.
