SAS troops and police are set to patrol the streets of some major cities in Britain in the wake of the Berlin attack.

We have been warned that an attack on our shores is "highly likely".

We shouldn't let this 'threat' interfere with us going about our daily lives but it is pretty worrying that the horror of what happened in Berlin and Nice could quite easily happen here.

We have great intelligence at work in this country but even they can't predict or stop a determined lone wolf.

Surely it's got worse now though, hasn't it?

I know that the police have been patrolling 'high risk' areas for a long time... but have SAS troops also been involved before?

I only started this thread because they were just talking about this on GMB a little while ago and I thought it was a new thing.

Apologies if not.

It's probably more visible now but this country was on lock down when the IRA were doing their thing. Because of that it's all pretty normal.

(Wasn't having a go by the way . )

Well the MoD don't comment on the deployment of Special Forces, so I won't exactly trust the Mirror regarding the truthfulness of their "story".

But it spreads fear and sells papers so mission accomplished,

Wonder if the mirror was paid by IS

And that is the point. This is all about generating 'fear' because it sells newspapers. Context never applies.

You are far more likely to be killed in a road accident than you are by a terrorist attack but, of course, that doesn't sell newspapers.

Due to the IRA British people have always been in the mindset of looking out for anything suspicious. I think its one of the reasons most Terror attacks here are foiled before they happen.

Not sure what armed police, let alone unarmed police, could do to stop a truck or van to be honest.

These type of attacks are ultimately trivial to carry out. I could go out and run over people in the town centre in the next hour if I so choose.

The fact we've had so few suggests that any treat is not as extreme as is portrayed

The levels are frightening https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=eu...utf-8&oe=utf-8

I'm not suggesting that terrorist incidents are trivial and not heartbreaking.

That's true. If someone is determined to kill a number of people, they can go out and do so. Not much anybody can do to stop them.

The threat level hasn't changed. From International terrorism it's been "severe" for a long time. As it was for nearly thirty years when we lived through being blown to buggery by the IRA.
The current threat from Norther Ireland related terrorism is one level below, "substantial".

The problem is that such attacks play in to the hands of those who are using such attacks and the 'politics of fear' to greatly reduce our freedoms... For our our safety, of course.

You only have to look at the recent introduction of the "Snooper's Charter" as evidence of this.

Well exactly. The last significant terrorist attack in the UK was the London bombings on 7 July 2005, over 11 years ago! The "Security Services" have been claiming the terror threat is severe for ages now when in reality the threat varies between "miniscule" and "non-existent".

But as you say, exaggerating the terror threat sells newspapers and helps governments to pass laws restricting our freedom.
