They ended up being, but not sure if that was intended.

Jack wasn't the same when Vera died/. Could you say the same about Audrey and Alf

I wasn't aware Audrey and Alf were seen as one of Corries golden couples

It has never been stated, so that is why I threw them in, to see if others feel Audrey and Alf were

I wouldn't call Jack and Vera 'replacements' for Stan and Hilda, they were more the next to take the baton in the relay. The worthy heirs to the 'perennial loser' title.

It's important to remember that there was a long period of 'handover' between the two couples. The Duckworths weren't simply created to fill the void left by the Ogdens, they had built their position on the show over many years with all characters appearing side by side and some point. For a long time both Jack and Vera were little more than recurring characters with no fixed position on the street, it wasn't until the early 80s that that started to change.

Irrespective of the characters themselves, the rough couple who always fail in life, argue viciously but genuinely love each other are an absolute soap staple, a real archetype. I would argue that Stan and Hilda created this archetype and that the Duckworths were the worthy successors who further defined the archetype for the 80s and 90s. They both stand as juggernauts of soap in their own right.

Alf was definitely a character in his own right but I would argue that pairing Audrey with Alf made her the character we know today.

From her first appearance in 1979, Audrey was flighty and man-man, always out for a good time. This was initially a good juxtaposition with the sensible and shy Gail but I think that the writers soon got tired of Audrey and she appeared very sporadically for the next few years, frequently involved in a story about her latest boyfriend being some dodgy type. For me, early Audrey is a very one-dimensional character with few defining features other than her love of men and a good time.

Once Audrey was paired with Alf, the character developed exponentially and was given much more depth and believability. She still retained the flighty, life-loving elements, but was grounded by the more safe and secure Alf.

The show needs another couple like this........ Maybe Tim and Sally.

You've got a point there - The writers seem to have forgotten that some marriages do last even if they're not idyllic.

Personally, I thought Julie & Brian had considerable potential as a comic couple -
Not like the Duckworths, but maybe like Mavis & Derek.
It was especially funny the way that Julie saw the homely head teacher as some sort of dreamboat and was convinced all the other women on the street saw him the same way.
