People who "bounce" when they walk
Have you noticed some people seem to bounce up and down when they walk along the street. I've just looked out of my window and someone was walking like they had springs in their shoes and going about 20 miles and hour. I'm not being critical, it just always makes me smile. Are they in a rush or are their legs more springy than other people's?

It is a strange way of walking. It's like they are walking without putting their heels on the floor.

At 20mph they'd be running, not walking.

Funny enough I have. My own observation is that they are normally skinny young men with long hair ( metal fan types)
Mickey Flanagan did a funny set piece on how in an attempt to look cool he used to copy the "take a step, drag the other leg, take a step, drag the other leg walk that the cool black lads did. He said it worked until you had to speed up to catch a bus, then you just looked a tit. People watching is a fascinating fun pastime.😊 |

I haven't noticed any recently but two or three years ago there seemed to be a bit of a craze round here for people to wear springy blades attached to their feet ..........a bit like the blades that Paralympic runners use
They fair whizzed along ! |

Might be cyclists. Hard-core cyclists often develop a funny walk

Is that because they develop such strong (and, IMO, ugly) calf muscles?
![]() ![]() My coach recommended doing rowing as well to avoid ending up too out of proportion |

I'm a bouncer I think. But it is inherited from my dad. My oldest brother walks exactly the same as dad did.

Poeple who ''glide'' are probably using Alexander Technique. A lot of actresses, in particular, do that. But what ''bounce'' signifies, i hav no idea .......

Would I be being stereotypical if I said a lot of these bouncey walkers look like boffin types? Maybe they've created a mathematical formula for the best way to get from A to B, shortest time, avoiding hazards, least energy used etc.

not as bad as arm swingers, you know the type - look like they're marching and if you walk past one too close you get a slap in the arm. And then they look at you like you're to blame.

I'm not sure how they do that in their heels!

Human gait refers to locomotion achieved through the movement of human limbs. Human gait is defined as bipedal, biphasic forward propulsion of center of gravity of the human body, in which there are alternate sinuous movements of different segments of the body with least expenditure of energy. Different gait patterns are characterized by differences in limb movement patterns, overall velocity, forces, kinetic and potential energy cycles, and changes in the contact with the surface (ground, floor, etc.). Human gaits are the various ways in which a human can move, either naturally or as a result of specialized training.

Emmabarssinsly i used to wlak on my toes and bounced. Now seeing other do that makes me cringe.
Others walk as though they have benedy spring in their knee and when they stop walking, they dont stand up straight but a Z shape iehead leans back, knees stick out, and feet are behind the knees |
