hi,

sorry for my lack of technical knowledge, but basically i've got a Qose av transmitter/receiver (5.8GHz) setup to watch sky on my bedroom tv. it's been working fine for ages, but last week i had a new curtain pole fixed near my living room tv and think it may be causing interference. i'm not 100% sure the interference started when the pole was put up - it might be something from one of the nearby flats instead.

anyway, last night i tried to move the transmitter and receiver, adjusting the settings (4 of them) and made the interference much worse instead of better! it's totally unwatchable now.

what should i do? do i need a new one with more settings or something? if so, what's the best on the market? would slingbox work instead?

i have chromecast fitted to the bedroom tv, but that's not working well at all.

thanks,
helen.

just looked at the spec and its a scart plug, if your sure the connections are all fine, when you moved it back to its original position did it get better?

Just a thought when you adjusted the settings did you did it in both boxes i.e. channel 1 on transmitter and receiver?

yes, the same channel was selected on both transmitter and receiver - I tried all 4 channels and put them back on channel 2 as it had been originally. the picture itself was relatively clear but it kept jumping and there were 2 thick horizontal interference lines and loud buzzing so that's what I mean by unwatchable

What you describe sounds like mains interference which could be due to a failing power supply but equally nothing more than a badly seated, or possibly faulty, cable. Unplug and reseat the cables from the Sky box to the sender and the receiver to the TV at both ends, you can even try reversing them one at a time which may mask any fault they might have. As it is a SCART lead ask around, lots of people have old discarded ones in a drawer otherwise they are cheap to buy. If you switch off the transmitter or receiver is the buzzing still there?

Interference from a faulty router or something similar in another flat is a possibility, microwave ovens can cause interference, usually on 2 rather than 5GHz units but such interference is usually short lived unless you live above a takeaway.

Unfortunately the only way to prove it isn't interference is to take it to another location.

just to check, what do you mean by reversing them? swapping the cabling over?

no, there isn't buzzing when the units are switched off.

thanks for the advice and info - i'll try a new scart if needed.

By reversing them I just meant swapping them end to end, plugging the Sky box end into the transmitter and vice versa, sometimes masks problems and is free to try. If there is no buzzing with the units off it looks like the TV SCART is probably OK. Try taking the SCART out of the transmitter, there will be no picture of course but if the buzzing stops the Sky box SCART is suspect. If the buzzing continues take the transmitter to the bedroom fairly close to the receiver, again there will be no picture but if the buzzing stops your equipment is probably OK and the problem is likely to be interference so buying a new unit won't help sadly.

I used to have a cheap sender from Tesco and it was a pain, somedays it would be OK, others it wouldn't and moving anything in the room used to upset it. In the end I ran an aerial cable to the upstairs set fed by a cheap Mercury brand modulator from Amazon, no stereo sound but reliable. I think some Sky boxes have a modulator built in, someone on this forum I'm sure will know.

Unplug the SCART lead from the Sky box to the transmitter. Then connect the plug that was in the Sky box into the transmitter and the plug that was in the transmitter into the Sky box. So the cable is effectively turned around.

SCART leads are bi-directional, ie they send audio and video from end A to end B and from end B back to end A at the same time using separate wires inside the cable. If there is a fault in the A to B wires then reversing the cable uses the B to A wires which may not have a problem.

Do the same thing at the receiver/TV end.
