Used to go out every NYE, during the mid '80's to the mid '90's and loved it! I especially remember NYE '84 when I drank vodka for the first time, I was not well NYD '85!!

It was always a big thing with us, getting our tickets for the club we went to and looking forward to seeing the New Year in, it was usually a great atmosphere.

I missed NYE '99 as I had that really, really bad flu bug that Christmas and had to stay in, couldn't even drink.

Now, I don't really bother, might get a bottle of wine to toast the New Year, but as MrKat works NYE, I don't go out, just try to get a text through to him at midnight. I remember the first year I did that, it was NYE '98, on my first PAYG mobile.

Been there, done that with drunk people milling around Trafalgar Square. A friend and I went once (neither of us were drunk) and for me it is something that I did once and would not do again.

the firework display, if I remember, was to celebrate the millennium and it was free. Now there is a display every year, you have to have a ticket and has just lost the plot. It seems now that all it is about is which country throws the most money on having the biggest and best firework display.

I'm always amazed that people pay to watch a fireworks display, unless of course it's for a local or charity event.

Just standing outside the tickited area gives exactly the same view!

i used to enjoy the "old fashioned" NYE that we did

the evening itself was just the family, no-one would drink before midnight, we would all get dressed up for what was in Scotland known as "the bells". after a seeing in the New Year with a drink at home we would then go first footing around the village.

once we had been to a few neighbours houses me and my brother would set off to a friends house who used to have a party every year, stopping a few times on the way and sort of gate-crashing parties, as long as you had your own carry-out and gave the hosts a drink no-one minded.

we would eventually get to the party at 3-4am and just be there for the rest of the night, would get a proper fry-up for breakfast there, before we headed home at 8-9am.

erm.... is this a joke or sarcasm?...

of course new years eve was celebrated and called new years eve... 1999 though upped it a notch , from a more quieter celebration to the pyromaniac show its become. nye 1999 was amazing, everywhere lit up with fireworks. this was a lot less common before with only a few. but since its become part of the party... the hype...

Same here. OH went down with it on Christmas Eve and I followed on Christmas Day. OH then had to drive to his family on Boxing Day because he had promised his sister that he would while I stayed with my family. We were still really poorly on NYE and it was a hell of a struggle to stay awake until midnight.

We did drink although nothing like the quantity we would have and the fancy wine we had bought for the occasion tasted rubbish. We left the champagne until we felt better a week or so later.

The Millennium Bug caused mayhem in the human population.

Technology was completely unaffected.

1999 was when NYE began plagiarising Bonfire Night, fireworks used to be better when they were once a year, I'm now sick of ****ing fireworks

Awful wasn't it? I was that ill that Boxing Day MrKat wanted to take me to hospital, I've had colds and even flu before but never as bad as that year. It left me really weak as well and not feeling completely better for a couple of months.

I gathered that only really happened after the millennium, or am I wrong?”

Nobody had New Years day off work before the millenium so it wasn't really possible to celebrate it as you had to work the following day. That is except every five years or so when New Years day fell at a weekend and when this happened we had what was known as Hootenanny where we would have an almighty celebration (like 5 New Years in one). Unfortunately it led to such unbridled debauchery that crime rates would soar and there would be many, many accidents in which people (including children and the elderly) would be injured or even die and so Hootenanny was banned by Tony Blair in 2000. Fortunately New Year 1999 fell at a weekend. From 2000 New Years day was made a bank holiday and things became as they are now.

For me anyway NYE has gone downhill since 1999, Millenium was massive, Christmas 99 was nothing as all the hype was for NYE, First and last time I have ever seen street parties in my town with hundreds of people young and old out and about celebrating and it had a real feel good party vibe.

But since then NYE has been a bit Meh.. I gave up on it around 2002, nothing lives up to the hype of the millennium.

Only 983 years till the next one. If that's too long for you, then there's the mere 83 years till New Century Eve.

Unfortunately for me I was one of the programmers in charge of a team dealing with the Millennium Bug. We'd spent several years fixing code but the company still wanted a body on site just in case something did pop up. Can't complain too much they did pay extremely well

So I saw the actual cross over from '99 to '00 waiting for the calls but ironically by the time the UK did cross over we'd already fixed the few in Australia and New Zealand when they'd crossed over and issued patches

So much of NYD was me just waiting for the support phone to ring and it didn't
