I have an intermittent problem in that my central heating sometimes goes off when the water switches off. The heating is on all the time now it's cold and we regulate it using the thermostat.

The water is on a timer and goes on and off twice a day as expected.

If we put the water back on, the heating comes back on.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Possibly a diverter valve (motor) failure. This valve directs the hot water coming from the boiler to either the radiators, the water cylinder or sometimes both. It is actuated by an electric motor and they are prone to failing.

Other times the valve itself can get stuck.

Replacing the motor is fairly easy and the part costs about £20. Replacing the valve needs a skilled engineer and including labour could cost £100, maybe more if it's an awkward sod to get off.

Thanks Andrue, it isn't something I would even consider trying to fix myself, but it's nice to have a bit of knowledge when the plumber comes.

The motor is a very simple fix, a couple of screws, no actual plumbing.

There is usually a slot on top of the valve you can turn with a screwdriver or a lever to see if the system is switching between hot water and heating correctly.

Thanks again - I'll try that when I get home.

Had to wait until it went faulty again and it just has.

I found the lever but, though it will move a bit, it feels like I'd force and maybe break it if I tried to move it. So it looks like the plumber will be called out to replace it.

That's how mine works all the time.
