The only way in and out of the UK would then be flight and ships, who would carefully check passports and boarding passes before allowing people in. Furthermore it would lead to less trucks on the road and more factories creating goods from home.

Odd idea as you do realise OP that the trucks go back with goods too? Also, passports can be checked as well as they are at airports or ports so your reasoning falls a little flat.

Is the Channel Tunnel a major source of illegal immigration? I recall pre-tunnel we had loads of ferries shipping goods and people to and from the Continent so no tunnel would just increase the number of ferries and more huge traffic-jams when either storms in the channel or French Dock-workers went on strike

I don't see why having only ferries would make customs more secure

Yet another ill-thought out thread by starry rune. It's like you sneeze out a ludicrous, completely bonkers idea, then quickly post it.

I shudder to think about the stuff you come up with yet don't post!!

No and people using it don't cross the channel without passport checks.

Given that Trump will be building a wall across the southern border, I agree.

KEEP JOHNNY FOREIGNER OUT

No need to close the Chunnel, just vastly increase the number of border control officers

I take it you're against it being closed and demolished?

More traffic for us ferry workers though, but no a silly idea.

Ive never agreed with it being built; have never used it ( Have used the ferries often over the years) and could quite happily see it filled back in.

there's more change of people arriving in the UK illegally from boats and planes due to the vast size of the country and it's unfenced border than via the channel tunnel with all the security

no it wouldn't. the trucks may have to drive further in the uk because the trips to and from ferry ports and airports to transport goods is further

and more factories creating goods from home.
no it wouldn't as that's a seperate issue entirely. in fact if it's harder or more expensive to export goods as a result of the tunnel being closed, in turn more factories in the UK may close

When we leave the EU France will close it down anyway, they will not want the likes of us travelling to and through France. They will only open a small door at their end to let migrants walk though it to England, that is their plan.

You're forgetting our land border with the Republic of Ireland, the one only yesterday our dear PM said shouldn't return to a hard border of the past post Brexit.

No need to close the Chunnel, just vastly increase the number of border control officers
Something else to be paid for out of the £350m per week that was going to the NHS?

Quite, try to sneak into the UK through a well protected tunnel or take a smuggler's boat to a beach on the SE Coast

You think France will no longer want British tourists? Haha, that's one of the funniest and most stupid things I've read today, as is the idea that the channel tunnel should be closed.

Closing it will not solve any problems at all. Some people still have this stupid idea that the tunnel is some sort of free for all where immigrants can just walk or get a train through with no controls. It's not, it's got security just as great or even greater than the ferry ports and almost on a par with airlines. I should know, I travelled on Eurostar just a few months ago.

Stupid idea.

The only reason the South of England gets decent weather in Summer is because it comes in from the continent via the Tunnel.

I can probably think of a funnier one given a bit of time Once Brexit arrives few will have the money to travel to Dover never mind the fare to France, you will not be able to move in Gtreat Yarmouth and Lowestoft for British tourists

Ah that's sorted then. You've never used it, so it must be fine to fill it in.

This island has a lot of nutters on it.
