Closing it will not solve any problems at all. Some people still have this stupid idea that the tunnel is some sort of free for all where immigrants can just walk or get a train through with no controls. It's not, it's got security just as great or even greater than the ferry ports and almost on a par with airlines. I should know, I travelled on Eurostar just a few months ago.”

Woosh?

We use the tunnel for France and Harwich for Easter in Holland and theres hardly any security at Harwich the tunnel is very thorough. When I went in November they were checking door handles and steering wheels for traces of explosives, dogs sniffing cars and coaches as well

That wont happen the EU countries will still want your pound notes.
The majority of cars on the French toll roads are from other countries and are not French
the French never seem to use their toll roads.
Has far as passport is concerned I have crossed many times and can assure you there is stringent controls both sides of the channel mostly by British immigration.

Talking about a retrograde step.

I can only assume that the OP thinks that the Channel Tunnel is a bit like a road underpass where anyone can just wander down a few steps and walk through at will...

Fill it with water, turn the trains into submarines on wheels.

Let's see Johnny Migrant swim through it then.

I think the OP means, that less means of entry is more stable, than adding more structures allowing more people to enter. The tunnel is a bit of a risk, as anyone can slip through easily, but it can be closed at both ends if the need arises.

Other than there being border control at either end.

It should never have been built in the first place.

Security is not that good when people can just walk through it and not be noticed or lorries with people in the back can come through.
Also, other countries need to use passports, not so called I.D cards, tat every would have in some E.U countries, at least you can take passports off people to at least try and stop them travelling.

Why not. It's a gateway into and out of Europe without having to fly or take the ferry. Some of us would prefer not to fly for example.

And if we finally get our high speed train network up and running, the UK and continental networks can be directly linked up.

Even domestically it has had some benefits, as HS1 would never have been built if the Channel Tunnel hadn't, as part of HS1 is used for domestic high speed train services.

And there is still the possibility of being able to get direct high speed train services to countries like Germany and Spain, rather than having to change in France or Belgium.

I agree;

…if the tunnel roof develops a catastrophic leak it would quickly drain the English Channel and permanently flood the entire South East of England to a depth of 20 feet.

It’s an accident waiting to happen;…brick it up at either end I say!

Indeed. I buy a lot of items from Germany and other places in Europe.

I think it should be extended to just outside your house.

Yet people still managed to slip through. You'd need a wall of border guards to stop anyone. I remember when there wasn't a channel tunnel, and ships, planes were used to go abroad, with little bother about it.

No it shouldn't.

Next question.
