The most used device must be "the kids are ill, I've got to go". Almost every single episode in soaps this is used to get rid of a character.

Affairs.

In Hollyoaks especially deaths (mostly murders) and kidnaps.

That's the ideal way of getting rid of the kids. Some soaps don't even bother making an excuse.

No one ever using protection while sleeping with 2 people (Male and female)

The whole using a public place to hold a private chat

Or 'I need to tell you something urgent' Someone/something interrupts and they never ever tell the person straight after, Usually it takes weeks

Corrie and Emmerdale are both bad for that just before the ad breaks, to try and create a bit of tension. The character will never usually find out though.

The pregnancy test kit that always seems to magically fall out of the bin into the hands of someone that can not keep a secret.

A new arrival having a secret past. (Summer Bay's Morgan family I'm looking at you)
Going to tell somebody something and the other person saying let me go first, making the first person not confess a duff duff worthy secret

Lol, basically any secret attempted 'confession' before Christmas/wedding day/funeral etc.:

Naughty Character: Look, there's something I need to tell you...
Oblivious Spouse: Me too. Let me go first, okay? And then I'll listen to whatever you say, but I need to say this.
Naughty Character: Okay.
Oblivious Spouse: I don't tell you enough, but I love you so much. I've never been so happy. I know you'd never, ever hurt me. You've always been there for me. Thank you.
Naughty Character: *looks shifty*
Oblivious Spouse: What were going to say?
Naughty Character: Nothing. It doesn't matter.
*Oblivious Spouse hugs Naughty Character, Naughty Character looks guilty over their shoulder*
