One thing they didn't explain was how they are going to be able to maintain the crane, given that it will be above the exposed core and extremely dangerous.

Hugely impressive but you have to hope the expertise gained in doing this will never need to be employed again.
Some cool drone footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QBxxudztgA |

Although it doesn't explain how they make repairs to the cranes and other equipment as I doubt they will last 100 years.
![]() Brother in law went near there on one of those tours a week before this slid into place. |

Just watched this earlier today. In short, an absolute masterpiece of engineering and design. Just incredible and every person who worked on that has every right to be proud of themselves. What a story to tell the grand kids!!
Apart from how H&S has moved on since the 80's it was interesting to see just how much more advanced engineering has become, just in that time gap alone. Yet even something as crude and simple as a chunk of barbed wire brought it to an unexpected stop! Nothing they couldn't overcome thankfully. Another thing i noticed, whilst this was an international effort with people from many countries, all the non-British spoke excellent English. This has been another brilliant documentary from BBC4 and definitely one i've saved for my 'library' collection! |

Ahhh missed it but will look for it on Iplayer.
Did they discuss in detail the demolition process using the cranes/lifting gear? |

It's not being totally demolished, they can't do that for obvious reasons as there are still some areas which are highly dangerous. The entire new structure has been designed to cover the original concrete Sarcophagus. They spoke with someone who had worked on erecting that and he explained it was crudely built in a hurry using no tie bars or bolts so only had a lifespan of 30 years. The new cover which is vast, has a lifespan of 100 years. But once covered it doesn't stop there and when you view the documentary you will see what they are doing. It really is an amazing feat of technology and engineering.

One wonders, that as a lot of nations have "chipped in" to pay for this, how much would the Russians have contributed if it had occurred in the USA?

Pripyat is actually in Ukraine though the incident occurred when Ukraine was part of the USSR. Western Ukraine is generally west-facing and pro-EU so international co-operation from the west has a political dimension as well as being self-serving to avoid further radiation reaching Western Europe.

That response doesn't in any way address the question, does it?

My comment was quoted and an answer posted. But not one that you could call appropriate. No further response from the same poster was made, that hasn't bothered me. Let's all move on shall we? |
