I have an Acer Aspire 5740 laptop (64-bit). I decided not to go with Windows 10 but stay with Windows 7.

Since the end of September, there has not been any automatic updates for Windows 7 on my laptop. I have checked for updates and all what could l see were optional updates. I tried to download these but they were taking too long and gave up in the end.

Please could anyone explain why 1) I have not getting any automatic updates and 2) optional updates are slow to download?

Cheers in advance.

Thanks for this. Which link(s) is the best to follow for my laptop, the one in post 3 or post 5 (3102810 or 3135445)?

Post #3 works. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes for downloads, even when it's "fixed".

Still, that's better than days or never.

Yes post #3 is where I ended up after a bit of searching. Once you have those updates installed, Windows update will find more which may require restarts.

After that all will be fine, well it has been for me ...... looks for some wood.

I'm not really a savvy tech when it comes to computer jargon! Please correct me if anything is wrong!

So l ignore the paragraphs 'change notes' and 'validity/coverage'?

Continue to 'solutions to the issues' where l select 'servicing stack September 2016 Win7 x64' download making sure service pack 1 is already installed on the laptop.

Monthly updates: Which update should l pick, 'security only' or 'monthly rollup'? This download follows the one above?

Is there anything else l should do or know about?

Try reading. It's hardly 'War & Peace'. "Got the jist?"

Hint: Ignore the paragraph on 'Vista' It's quite literally a pamphlet and the answer to your question is in it.

Spoiler

Well, l have downloaded and installed the servicing stack update. The pop-up box appeared and is searching for updates but this has been going on for 45 minutes plus without success!

Should the monthly updates have been in placed before l downloaded and installed the servicing stack update?

July rollup for Update Agent (might be installed as you had some updates September)

September Service Stack Update (in case you don't have it)

Monthly rollup (December) as I believe the patches are now monolithic like W10.

Depends on how FUBAR the updates are - some updates only install via CMD (Admin) using wusa.exe but you should stop wuauserv service.

I tend to find that shortening the names from the Update Catalog D/Ls works better on W10 (e.g. WindowsX-KBXXXXXXX-x64.msu)

Each successful installation should prompt a restart.

Been discussed a bazillion times on this and other forums.

These are the two updates that you need to install manually. After that, updating returns to normal.

KB 3102810
KB 3135445
