As the main pay services have a 4K / UHD box with some services in UHD now mostly online with the like of Netflix and You Tube which many UHD / 4K TV have too.

VM new TiVo box called V6 has those two services and now BBC is testing their Iplayer in UHD in the last two days

So as BBC is part of Freesat will box makers now put out boxes that can take 4K / UHD services too.

Humax make a UHD Youview box for BT customers so they may be first but other could also be ready to go UHD on a Freesat box ?

I would like to know if Freesat turners in UHD TV's be able to take any UHD services from Freesat with a software update ???

Without any prospect of a Free To Air UHD satellite service in 2017 there is no way that you will get a 4K Freesat box in 2017 (there is nothing to watch other than IP services or Sky Q).

Newer 4K TV's can already view the SES Astra demo UHD channel from 28.2E. Freesat capable sets may find it on lcn 998 on the Freesat epg.

The tuner has nothing to do with UHD capability - that is all down to the decoding hardware/software for the video signal.

Thanks for the replies to the questions...

I would add after your reply I looked and my TV picked up the test fine and easy but as it has no EPG number or listings ....So a 4K / UHD TV with Freesat turner can pick up the test on 998 then can a TV with Freeview play also, be able to pick up any UHD services when they come if it's not down to turners but software ?

I found in the past that TV boxes and TV's soon added HD when they saw the public buy into it and so far most TV's sold to day are UHD / 4K so have chips and able to link to the internet for software updates .

We have seen BT Youview UHD box which does pick up freeview SD & HD channels and BT internet channels in SD HD & UHD.

We seen Sky Q with Sky dumping there old TV services for Internet services in SD , HD and UHD.

We seen Virgin this month bring out a new box which handles all it's normal SD HD channels with easy and allow customers to use the Netflix and You Tube EPG links now in 4K / UHD by network and now BBC is testing UHD iPlayer on VM new box too.

So why should Freesat not get a box that can use the 4K UHD services like the others when we know if people are going for all the above services with new 4K TV's then it only takes one company to see that if they are first in the market then they can win sales.

We know BBC and others will bring services as soon as there are broadcasting space at the right price and people are able to view them in numbers ....

May be ITV & BBC and may be others on Freesat will join together to bring a UHD channel in 2017 ???

Sales are likely to be so low as to not be worth 'winning' , so no great incentive there.

However, even though there's little 4K content, and little chance of much 4K broadcasting in the near future, it's pretty well certain that the next generation of Freesat boxes will be 4K capable - as pretty well everything will be going that way.

As for when?, who knows?, 4K capable boxes 'may' be out in 2017, but it could even be 2018 - there's no great rush when the content isn't there.

It's a bit like TV's, 4K will become the norm as 4K panels will be what is made - and set-top boxes will become 4K, as the chips they use will become 4K - manufacturers aren't going to develop new 2K chips - and the old chips will be discontinued, forcing the adoption of 4K capable chip sets.
