No great surprise funding has been pulled once the story broke and the minister made no great effort to defend it.

They produce videos and perform on Ethiopian radio in a weekly drama and talk show for young women, addressing issues such as forced marriage, isolation and teen pregnancies, broadcasting on Sheger FM in Addis Ababa to a population of some 20 million. Their first live performance was at the Addis Ababa National Theatre in May 2013.
It would be interesting to see beyond the Daily Mail headlines and outrage to know what the real situation is and what the money was spent on. I seriously doubt the girls got a million each in cash, which is what seems to be implied by the "journalism".

From having read up on them it seems their aren't just a band but more of a movement to empower girls. Not too dissimilar to the Beat Bullying programme we have here.

Once again racist journalism doesn't tell the whole story. I just have to wonder when did the UK become so nasty and self obsessed? we never used to be like this so at which point did we become an inward looking nasty little Island?

Dunno, the day the overseas aid budget was legally set at 0.7% of GDP per chance.

Well done Mail.
Can't have black girls being educated and skilled to help lift them out of poverty, can we.
Hilarious. Because you cannot make this scam seem even remotely legitimate or worthwhile, you make it a race issue.
FYI,it would be a joke of a scheme and quite an insult to taxpayers, even,if it was for white British girls - the fact that its in another country just adds insult to the injury/

Too much politically correct "outward looking" gravy train and not enough common sense "inward looking" at our own problems has finally caught up with these false empathy con artists
I bet there are a few well paid "charidee executives" that are crapping themselves now the spotlight is starting to turn on their BS.

The difference though is that all of Britain's problems are our own doing.

Ethiopia doesn't have the luxuries we have.

Funding has been cancelled just as the evaluation phase was beginning to see if it was effective at changing behaviour and if it was cost-effective or not. So the funding does not appear to have been cancelled based on evidence it did not work or was not cost-effective. Instead it looks like funding was cut due to tabloid journalism misrepresentation and lack of ministerial support.

The minister had previously stated their intent to shift the focus of UK foreign aid to what benefits the national interest of the UK and UK trade. I wonder where the money saved by ending girl effect project yegna youth brand funding will now go.

So the crisis in our hospitals is the fault of those dying and waiting interminable times for treatment and the misogyny rampant in Ethiopia is due to the lack of luxuries. That is a strange outlook.

The NHS is failing for one reason and one reason alone. The Tories cut funding to it because their end game is privatisation. Whether this band got aid or not is irrelevant to that. Its a different issue entirely and do you think cutting aid like this will mean it goes into the NHS? think again.

The BIB actually comes from you. If there is too much if what you don't like and not enough of what you want then blame the electorate for voting god 'filthy empathy Von artists'

Well done to those that stopped the Govt wasting money on:

multi-platform brand, not merely a girl group, that addresses issues such as early forced marriage, violence and barriers to education through a radio drama, music, talkshows, and a YouTube channel.

irl Effect says Yegna reaches 8.5 million people, or 50% of the population in Addis and the Amhara region of Ethiopia, and helps change the lives of some of the hardest-to-reach and most disadvantaged girls in the world.

Three-quarters of girls who listen to Yegna say it has inspired them to continue their education and 95% of young male listeners say they would speak out against a girl being forced to marry, according to its evaluations

Oh FFS,the privatisation of the NHS began under New Labour.
This is 2017,stop blaming an individual political party and start looking at the whole rotten and corrupt system

I have no idea where the aid money will go but the funds to all sorts of things are being cut because the Tories are trying to meet the 0.7%. Hardly the fault of those lying on hospital trollies. The problems in Ethiopia that that aid money is ostensibly addressing stems from their culture, very much the problem of Ethiopians irrespective of which luxuries they have.

The Major government introduced PFI, Labour did nothing to stop it but did ensure that the NHS targets were kept to and a proper ratio of funding put in place.

Might be a lot cheaper if Ethiopian men stopped brutalising their women, treating them like second class citizens and forcing them to enter forced marriages.

Why not address the cause!

Erm, that was the purpose of the now defunded project.

Why are we interfering in foreign countries still, leave them to it and with the money saved strengthen our boarders and help those in need and the nhs here.

Well I'm still waiting for that 'common sense' answer re my question or were you just doing the same as those 'charidee' types, making it up as you go along.

When Nigel Farage sunk his teeth into British politics I suspect.
