We are the only European country with a total public transport shut down on Xmas and Boxing Day/s. New York has public transport too.
Is this just for financial reasons? Lots of people work Xmas and Boxing day in essential services over Xmas.
It would help those who don't have a car, or who can't afford surcharged taxis. Would limit the number of cars on the road which can only be a good thing.
It is bizarre that London shuts down entirely.

We have public transport here on Xmas day, there are buses that go to the Hospitals and they run every hour.

There are buses running in Edinburgh on Christmas Day.

Before ranting, OP should check facts.

the bus drivers in London should be working christmas day, rather than them sit at home eating dinner with their family they should be carting an empty bus around town

if you need to get somewhere walk, if you need to get somewhere in an emergency I am sure a few Uber mob will be logged on, also some of them black cab driver never go home

The Manchester Airport to Manchester bus is running Christmas day. Loads of buses and Sunday service on the trams for Boxing Day.

Would you like to work on Christmas and New Year day?

I don't think there has been public transport in London since the '70s at least. Surprised that Edinburgh has some running.
I've often driven to relatives on Christmas morning as the roads are so quiet - makes a nice change!

From the TFL (Transport for London) website:

Xmas Day: There's no service on public transport: the Tube, buses, National Rail, TfL Rail, London Overground, DLR, Trams, Rivers or Emirates Air Line.

Boxing Day:
Tube - Tube services start at 07:45 today, after which you can expect a Sunday frequency
Bus - 24-hour services begin again around 06:00
DLR - A service around every 10 minutes
Trams - Sunday service with a weekday start and finish time
Overground - No service on London Overground

You should really do a cursory Google search before making such an ill-informed rant.

Before ranting you should check what relevance Edinburgh has to the OP. Regardless of whether they're right or wrong, your post is irrelevant.

So put it away.

It's not a total shutdown, but as good as. If you're lucky, you'll get a few sparse services and no trains at all AFAIK on Christmas Day anywhere in the UK.

Most people no, but some wouldn't mind.

Just like some people don't mind working for the emergency services, in hospitals, utility workers etc., all of which require 24/7 365 provision.

Its called public transport, but is run by the private sector as a profit making business and not enough demand on xmas day to make it profiable, number of people using buses has been going down yearly. Most the population are not working on xmas day, and most dont work on boxing day so they only tend to run a limited service.

This work thing again tim. We've done this before IIRC. Not all people (would) use public transport to go to work, especially around Christmas and other public holidays. Hence off peak/leisure travel!

Hardly a rant, but misinformed somewhat.

You obviously haven't seen some of my rants.

If there was money in it they would run the services, the most time people use public transport is to get to work and back, that is why the time tables change at certain times after evening rush hour, you dont run a service not to make money from it, its not about what some public make like, its about is there money to be made if not you dont run the service, you dont run a business to lose money its there to make you money.

Interestingly Edinburgh has one of the few municipal bus companies not sold off after deregulation, which might explain why they have buses running on Christmas day.

Worse than the shutdown over Xmas is that often they run a Sunday service 'tween Xmas and New Year.

Having joined a company in October I wasn't eligible for holidays and had to go to work in the gap days. If it wasn't bad enough being almost the only person in the office I have to cope with the train 'tween home and office running a fraction of the service

Really I thought you might run a Public Service to provide a service rather than cut everything that doesn't provide a return on investment

Its called public transport but run by the private sector, why would you run a business to lose money ? Unprofitable bus routes are being scrapped or scaled back because of deep cuts in support from councils whose budgets are being squeezed, new figures disclose today.

Bus subsidies provided by major English councils have been slashed by 23 per cent in real terms since the 2010 . The government cut council budgets, the council cut subsidies given to the bus compnies, the bus companies cut the services down

Regarding 'surcharged' taxis.
In London, licenced black cabs are allowed by TFL to add an additional £4.00 for every hiring from 20.00 hrs. on 24/12/16 until 06.00 hrs. on 27/12/16, and between 20.00 hrs. on 31/12/16 until 06.00 hrs. on 02/01/17.
This means that if the fare is £12.00 on the meter, there will be a £4.00 extra, making it £16.00, if the metered fare is £33.00, then it will be £37, hardly gouging for working those unsociable hours, probably ferrying drunks around.
Imitation taxis, minicabs, and Uber, will charge what they reckon the punter will stand for, and no, I'm not a black cab driver.

Is Edinburgh not in the UK?

I could also point out that in many parts of the UK there is public transport on Boxing Day including in London.

Edinburgh Zoo is also open on Christmas Day.

To be fair, the rest of the world doesn't really do "Boxing Day" so why would their transport shut down?

If I remember correctly there wasn't any public transport (buses) running in Rome on Christmas day.

This would be at a huge cost to the service provider. Our service is partially funded by the local government, and I for one would not want them running a service that is a) hardly used and b) ill using public money.

Who runs the services in those cities on Christmas day? None of the main operators (Xplore in Dundee and First in Glasgow and Aberdeen) run services on Christmas day.
