This is the OP and they're talking about the country so that could include Scotland. Unless they specifically mean England?

You'd think so, but I'll give you an example.

Trains to/from London/Luton run 24/7 except on Sunday mornings between about 2am and 6am, but run all night on Saturday morning. There is no reason to believe things should be different on Sunday mornings compared with Saturday mornings. On both mornings the trains will be mainly used by late night revelers and on Saturday mornings tend to get very crowded. IMO, it's not just a commercial decision, but a rail union decision.

The same may apply to running trains on Christmas and Boxing day. There's no harm in running Christmas Day and Boxing Day services one year and seeing if the demand is there after doing some promoting and publicity/advertising.

And nobody is going to tell me it wouldn't be economically feasible to run tube services on Christmas Day, at least on certain routes and sections.

Why would you need to run train services xmas day? why do you think most bus time tables change after rush hour in a evening, because the demad is less so you dont need the same level of service. And alot of rail maintance is done on xmasday and boxing day and on sundays when the need is less as the number of people using the trains is less

Is this just for financial reasons? Lots of people work Xmas and Boxing day in essential services over Xmas.
It would help those who don't have a car, or who can't afford surcharged taxis. Would limit the number of cars on the road which can only be a good thing.
It is bizarre that London shuts down entirely.”

A few Christmasses backalong we went to Spain for Christmas and New Year, the only time we have ever been away from home at Christmas
We arrived in Benidorm on very late on Christmas Eve only to discover that not only was their no public transport but all the shops were also shut. The only place where a meal was available wanted 90 euros each and that needed to be booked

Merseyside has a special free bus service on Christmas Day, with special bus service between 10am & 6pm Boxing Day.

I would, I once worked for a IT support company that paid triple time and a day in lieu for a 12 hours shift on Boxing day and Christmas day. Not bad considering we were mainly just sat there eating mince pies and watching DVD's.

Timetables change at certain times of the day all year round, including winter and summer timetables, but services still run on many of these services. I wish you'd stop fixating on 'public transport is mostly for going to work' and 'evening rush hour services' (*) etc. and look at the bigger picture.

(*) What about morning rush hour for example.

I remember I used to work on Christmas Day. I used to have to walk there and back.

Five miles each way.

This is the bigger picture, public transport busy times are people going to work, and going back home after work, the rest of the time the demand is alot less. You dont run the same levels at night because the demand is alot less. You dont have buses running just because someone might want one, as there is no money in that. you run a service to fit demand and to still make money. A rush hour is a part of the day during which traffic congestion on roads and crowding on public transport is at its highest. Normally, this happens twice every weekday—once in the morning and once in the afternoon-evening, the times during when the most people commute

BIB Glasgow definitely doesn't have any buses running on Xmas Day, and hasnt done since ive been living here for almost 20 years.. so your spouting rubbish.

It has a Sunday service on Boxing Day, and an airport shuttle on New Years day

No buses in Leicestershire on Christmas Day or New Years Day.

The two main operators are running shortened Sunday services on Boxing Day and a standard Sunday service on Tuesday, before reverting to a Saturday service on Wednesday.

I've heard this one I think.
Is it where you could get steak, mushrooms, parsnips, and chips, then buy a pair of boots and an overcoat, and still get change out of a farthing?

We don't, and we have the roads to ourselves, so can go and about. If you do see a car, that only means they're off to relatives for the day. We might go to the sea

But you could get 3 sweets for a farthing
6 for a halfpenny
12 for a penny! A definite treat

OK so I was wrong about boxing day, mea culpa

But Xmas day, there should be some public transport in London like other major cities. eg a nurse/cleaner/general staff at a London hospital working long, unsociable hour shifts. Being low paid, no way will s/he live near enough to work to walk, probably not cycle either. Not everyone can pay black cab Xmas rates, or Uber/minicab rates.
I think there should be a public holiday service, like there is in every other major city.
I'm not ranting btw. Just voicing an opinion. Lots of Grumpy Santas on here.

What's the service like if you don't want to go to the hospital?

A few places might have the odd route running on Christmas Day, but lets face facts it won't be much of a service....with many in the UK not having anything at all.

I highly doubt that the commercial operators are operating on Christmas day and boxing day, Jan 1st and Jan 2nd off their own backs.

If the local authorities don't fund a service on these days, no bus operates and let's face it unless you live in a big city that will be the abysmal state of affairs for most and you have to fork out for an extortionate taxi fare to get out and about, and at the public holiday rate.

[cambridge and surrounding villages] the buses finish at 7pm on christmas eve, none at all here christmas day and boxing day and sunday service the day after. the trains are the same as the buses with minor variations.

anyone where i live faces a round taxi fare of upwards of £70 [if they`re lucky] if they need the out of hours service and cannot get there under their own steam for whatever reason, much more if they`re further out of town, i`m 6 and a half miles away.

the taxi drivers are rubbing their hands.

mcdonalds is open all through, in case anyone needs an emergency burger.

Still denying that Edinburgh is part of the UK, still denying that there is pubic transport in many parts of the UK on Boxing Day.

We get a Sunday service on Boxing Day and all the bank holidays.

Unfortunately, a Sunday service here is no buses at all.

We get a sunday service on Christmas eve, Boxing day, and the 27th.

My first bus gets me to work 3 minutes before I'm due to start on the 27th, I can't drive to work as there is no parking, and a taxi will cost £25 - do definitely not ideal! That first bus is at 9am.
