.... or bird flu. How is it that this has been kept out of the news for so long? Would we be buying freshly killed turkeys for Christmas if we had known that the avian flu virus had hit this country? How many turkeys have been slaughtered for human consumption and possibly carrying the virus? Defra have issued a warning to all keepers of poultry, ducks and geese to keep them indoors but the general public are totally unaware of the significance.

Kept out of the news?

Well, I guess a couple months of stories might counts as being secret if people don't pay attention.

Pretty much.

It's certainly been covered in the BBC news repeatedly including the outbreak in Germany (I think it was, although it may have been Holland), and the precautions the British farmers were taking which included talking to a farmer in one of the barns where he had just moved his free range birds into.
Then the bits about an outbreak in the UK.

However it's not been a big story because from my understanding no one has died yet from it this time, and it's been detected early with the necessary plans for what to do already in place so as soon as there was a case anywhere they started to take additional precautions.

Most unlikely that you would catch anything as a) There's no evidence that the virus has mutated to a form which affects humans, and b) Once cooked all trace of any residual virus will be totally destroyed.

Obviously it's eminently sensible to thoroughly wash the hands after handling raw poultry anyway, but at that stage any virus on the damp bird will be inert and non airborne.
