I don't think it's racist to want characters who are well rounded, with a story behind them rather than a token, box ticking character just for the sake of making the show look more accepting of diversities. By all means, bring characters who are of a different ethnicity, LGBT or have disabilities, but give them a purpose to the show. The best example is Kyle from Eastenders. He was brought in as the show's first transsexual character played by a transsexual actor, but his character amounted to nothing and he was eventually axed.

No. Do you think if they brought in another diverse character the writers (Jonathan Harvey included) would actually bother working on the character or doing anything with them? Look at Steph, been in it nearly four years and has barely done anything and now the actress has quit, but now they are probably looking to fill her place with another character who will be underused and nothing to do.
Working as a writer for coronation street must be like working for the government. No matter how inferior or mindless the work you produce they can't get rid of you. Why doesn't Jonathan stand by his convictions and resign right now so someone a little more diverse in their writing can start immediately. I believe a letter of resignation doesn't have to be long and tedious like a soap storyline so a short note should suffice.

He'd still manage to get "bobbing" into his resignation letter

Ok, I understand what you mean. But reading the first few posts made it sound like everyone was being racist.
They need more characters by which I mean people about whom one might say, "He/She's a bit of a character!"
Corrie has some but they are longstanding ones.
I noticed someone above mentioned Steph and I agree, nothing much done with her character; lovely girl and all that but where is she going? Well she is going, apparently, and good for her. Hope she gets more interesting work.
Luke had potential but all he seems to be now, apart from Steph's brother, is a good looking mechanic. Kevin and Tyrone are far more interesting but that's all down to the writers.
As far as ethnicity goes, I haven't thought about that one. Dev is good fun but he's one of the oldies.
The gay people have had and still have good stories.
Nevertheless, I love Corrie. All the drama with the Platts, bodies under the floor, etc.
The evil Pat Phelan is good value.
Leanne and Michelle both expecting Steve's babies.

All the same it was stupid, just a mere excuse to let David and Kylie (the latter who got killed anyway) off with Callum's murder. ”
Ah yes. Silly, silly me. A good alpha male character and played by a good actor.
He must die.
Let's blame Callum's murder on him and let's bring Brian back.
What fun Corrie would have been with two 'baddies'. Phelan and Tony. And with Liz and Eileen as their partners....................
