Rocked by Brexit, UK consumer confidence ends the year in the doldrums: Report

Quote:
“After a year that saw the country vote to leave the European Union, the United Kingdom's consumer confidence ended 2016 way down on the start, despite a slight rebound in the autumn, the latest GfK index records.”

Quote:
“Staton detailed the U.K. index's overall narrative for 2016, which began positively but plunged post-Brexit. Any recovery in the autumn ended up "evaporating by year-end to limp home at -7 for December." He added that Brexit negotiations, the fall in the value of sterling and the prospect of higher inflation would provide "storm and stress" to the U.K. consumer confidence in 2017.”

So since brexit confidence is lower. Sounds like a no shit sherlock statement as 48% of those in the market research will be less confident.

So why aren't the 52% who, according to the polls, were going to lose now more positive about Brexit?

Could it be they are finally waking up to the consequences?

I wonder if the Express will report this decline in the same hysterically upbeat way they reported the rebound in Autumn?

According to GfK a market research company. Not official UK government figures.
The UK government:
Quote:
“The volume of spending in shops and online fell back slightly by 0.2% in August but this followed strong growth of 1.9% in July. So far there are no signs of a sharp collapse in consumer confidence as some early fears had suggested.
...
there has been no sign of a major collapse in confidence and, within the data that is available, some indicators of strength.”

I have been shopping today and the supermarket was full of people with trolleys stacked high, in one case two trolleys stacked high.

To be honest, even if this is true, is it really a bad thing if people decide to be a bit cautious about what they spending money on instead of people spending what they don't have on what they don't need? It's high time people started to be a bit more frugal and pragmatic instead of engaging in retail therapy.

The GFK index of consumer confidence? Is that officially accredited by the Office for National Statistics?

Far from being a proper survey it just seems to be another opinion poll - if 2016 has told us anything it's that polls don't always reflect reality.

Maybe they oversampled remoaners in inner London.

Or perhaps they oversampled "brexshitters" and it is even worse

Is this the level of debate your tediously repetitive threads seek? It's the first I've looked at and I'm glad now I haven't wasted my time looking at all it's predecessors.

I think he made the mistake of assuming Brexiters may have a sense of humour.

If that passes for humour then I can only speculate at the age of anyone who believes so. A primary school pupil might think it the height of wit but I can't believe anyone older would.

I guess he should have given out virtual humbugs instead, though only British ones.

No, no, no, surveys and experts isn't the way you measure these things. You have to listen to "angry man in the pub"

Bur feel free not to spoil us for the next couple of days. Could do with not having your daily dose of doom and gloom laden drivel. Goodwill to all men and all that.

Prehaps the same sort of people who constantly throw around the word "remoaners" in this forum? *shrugs*

Plenty of scope given the EU is one big charade.

Activate Scottish voice and just repeat "we're doomed I tell ya we're doomed" and basically we're as base zero of the OP's narrative from now till doomsday at the earliest.
