Hi, which would you people would say was the best one? If there is a good free or cheap one?

I want to be able to sequence songs and record from a mic?

I used to use Cu-Base but haven't used it for years now. What do most people use these days?

Thanks.

Audacity is free and pretty good so I hear, being tone deaf shall we say my musical abilities wouldn't get me very far beyond a count to 5 and press the same button on the keyboard.

If you have an iPhone of iPad try GarageBand. There may be Android equivalents.

Audacity is a great wav/mp3 editor and recorder, but it doesn't do sequencing.

Does anyone know one that has synths on it so that I can program synth arrangements? On Windows.

Thanks.

I don't mind paying for it if it's not too much.

I used to use this program for sequencing, it had on board synths but no audio but I can't remember what it was called. I wouldn't mind using that again if I could remember what it's name was.

It was Reason. It's too expensive though, I'm only doing this for a hobby.

Are there any programs like that, that are free or cheaper?

Thanks.

Not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for, but maybe try LMMS.

Cubase Elements is quite good for the price - currently £80 at Steinberg online. Does most of the things its big brother does - sequencing, audio in, MIDI, quantising live keyboard input, transposing etc. Transcribing kb input to written sheet music is present, but limited to one stave (unless I'm missing something). Most folk don't read music anyway - they use the 'piano roll'.

I used Cubasis back in the day, and have recently started again with Cubase Elements. I have it running on an i7 8GB SSD Windows 10 box with an old Creative X-Fi soundcard using my digital piano as MIDI controller. Comes with a good synth, but I've added Luxonix Purity VST for a few extra sounds. There's virtually no latency when I play live - a half decent sound card is a must for all the ASIO malarkey. Cubase says 5-7 msec, which is OK.

I tried Cakewalk Sonar, but couldn't get on with it. It's a bit like the 'Photoshop vs the rest' arguments. There's only one and it's Photoshop - ditto Cubase IMHO.

Have a look at Reaper.
Tried several DAWs and this one works for me.
It includes a sequencer called megababy.
There's an extension pack available here which includes a modified version of the sequencer.
Youtube tutorial here

There's also a free sequencer / arp vst called BlueARP.
Youtube guides here
Here's a list of free VST instruments

I'd almost given up with music production software but I find Reaper really intuitive and easy to use.

There's a very good, very comprehensive one called Reaper (for both Mac and PC) which is completely free for non-profitmaking individuals. You can find it and find out more about it here.

East or west audicity is the best. Mixxx is also a nice one. Compatible with Windows, Linux, OS X.
