Bloody hell, I bet mild mannered Mike Read never thought he was Mr Controversy when he did this interview and that he would end up with a DS message board devoted to him
! Not that I'm saying the O/P shouldn't have mentioned it either its an interesting topic. Its a shame we can't link the original interview due to it been in the Metro paper so people on here can see what was actually said, as I think some of you are really overacting wither personal attacks on his character. Speaking as somebody who read the same interview I will confirm that it was a Q & A interview where just one of the questions happened to be about the current state of music. If memory serves me correctly it was the interviewer asking a leading question that suggested modern music was pants and Mike Read merely agreed, adding those lines that he doesn't think people seem to care about music like they did in the past and that there are good singers out there + good songwriters but for whatever reason they don't seem to work together anymore. Personally, I don't think these are unreasonable comments. Just saying that cause some of you seem to be seeing this as Read's bitter old man’s personal attack on the industry and if you saw it in the original context it really wasn't an incendiary interview !

Many people are getting involved in creating music thanks to (often) free software that they use on their computers. I doubt this was so much of a phenomenon 20 years ago. There are also platforms to upload to so others can get to hear it and share it. Much of this music will be created within a DAW, using plugins exclusively, due to a lack of access to live musicians, so this will influence what music is created. That is, music is being made by people who perviously might not have been creating; traditionally most activity would have been due to people purchasing instruments and hooking up to jam / form bands etc. . |
