Mark Austin Leaves ITV/ITN
On tonight's News Mary Nightingale says goodbye to Mark Austin as he leaves after 30 years
I never saw this coming and nothing was mentioned on the ITV website I wonder who will replace him |

I'm sure the Beeb will welcome him with open arms won't they?

Two rumours seem to be circulating on the web. One is Sky News want him, the other is he'll stay with ITV but work on current affairs programs rather than the news. It seems he's still unhappy about ITV moving him from News at Ten to the Evening News.
I wonder if they might just do a reshuffle of existing staff like they did when Katie Derham left as main presenter of the lunchtime news or possibly go for a single presenter on the evening news? |

It's possible that his personal circumstances played a part in his decision.

Here's a similar story. After 31 years driving a cab, I stopped in October. So far no other taxi operators have head hunted me!
But Then , I didn't want them to. I wanted to retire! Could this be the case here??

He's retired, why would he want to be getting up at 3.30 a.m. ?
On Twitter Mark has said he's staying with ITV and he hasn't done his last news bulletin - suggesting a move to GMB might be on the cards. |

He hasn't retired at all, he's simply left his current job.

He seems too grumpy for GMB. But it would help towards them making it more news focussed.

They've already said Mary Nightingale will fly solo on the Evening News
And on a slightly related note, I can't believe that the insightful and politically astute Chris Ship is off to the broadcasting backwater that is the Royal Editor role. |

I've never understood why a barely 30 minute newscast needs two presenters. Fair enough if you're sharing a two hour continuous shift on a news channel (or 4 hours if you work at Sky News).
I can sort of understand regional news better with two though, especially on ITV as it helps with filling time, but more importantly the friendliness. |

I wonder if he might have asked to move to a less stressful role. I imagine his working hours are less likely to suddenly change as royal editor than as a political correspondent.
