Prisoners have taken control of a wing at prison in Kent with up to 60 inmates involved, the Prison Officers Association (POA) has said.
The association said there was an "ongoing disturbance" at the category B training prison HMP Swaleside.
POA chairman Mike Rolfe said the extent of the disturbance was unclear but fires have been lit.

Batton charge the excrements! I bet you that if these thugs got hold of a prison officer, no saying what they would do to him.

Our prison sytems broke, drugs galore. There should be zero tolerance in prison ie no drugs, dring, mobiles, money/etc/etc

This prison is where some of the people from Birmingham were moved. I'm shocked to find out that the bill for the damage in Birmingham is expected to be £2M as 4 wings were severely damaged.

This riot is 60 prisoners, no doubt smashing as much as they can.

19:37 'Fires have been lit'
Report suggest that inmates are 'burning something big' inside - as news breaks one wing has been taken by 'up to 60 prisoners'.

Well when you have government ministers reducing the numbers of prison officers by 30% and a increase in the number of people in prison things are going to happen.

It's time we got tough on prisoners, they cannot be allowed to trash prisons. Human rights be damned, prisoners are there because they violate the human rights of others. If they can't behave, stick them in solitary confinement on bread and water rations for the remainder of their sentence.

They're not "allowed" to trash prisons. That's why they end up getting punished for it.

Of course, the government could prevent riots by simply funding adequate staffing levels.

No doubt we'll be told what wonderful people they really are and how it's not their fault society wants them locked away!

Every time a prison is on the news it's one I've never heard of. Do we have thousands of prisons?

What punishment are they going to get? They are already in prison? A longer sentence is no punishment at all. Put them in solitary on bread and water for the remainder of their sentence and you'll magically see the rioting stop.

There are 3 prisons on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.

It's about time they turned prisons into prisons.

Brick walled cells with one uncomfortable bed, a toilet, no windows and cell bars. Prisoners should be forced to wear black and white striped clothing. They should be given three healthy meals a day on paper plates with nothing to drink but water.

No visitors, no pocket money, no phones, no TV, no radio, no magazines, no computers and no internet.

Just books to read... on how to be better people.

This is more like it. They destroy cells and set fire to things well then that's their problem.

Put the fires out but make sure fire crews are in no danger and any attempt to hurt them can be changed with attempted murder.

Then the prisoners have two choices, either live in the damp destroyed choas they have created or get to work repairing the damage they've done. You could even consider that to be training for a possible new life outside prison.

Obviously this is far too right wing a suggestion and the only way to stop rioting is to allow them out of their cells for 18 hours a day and a bigger TV in every cell complete with the full Sky Q UHD package!

I don't know the details yet, but isn't it possible that this has happened because of a lack of a concern for human rights?
It could just be that if these prisoners weren't treated as we would expect them to be treated they retaliated.
Like I say, I don't know the full details yet. But I'd rather wait to see why this has happened first. I'm not defending or justifying the action, I just want to know more about what's behind it first before I react emotionally.

The cause is irrelevant as nothing would justify rioting by people who are already taken away from the public for the public's safety. I'm all for funding prisons better, even if it means higher taxes for people, but I wouldn't waste prison money on good quality food and posh cells, I'd make them tough and the food basic.

That's a cat B prison for lifers, so he has at least been on remand somewhere for a while before going there.
