I've seen it online for a few months. I've never heard anyone say it in real life.

It's definitely derogatory as a snowflake would suggest something or someone that is very fragile and lightweight and not of much substance.
Are there not people like that though?

More popular recently but not a new term - "You are not special. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake" is from Fight Club (which takes us back to 1999).

Correct, it's online jargon and most of it originates from the US.

Indeed. 1996, though... the line's in the Palahniuk novel.

Its my opinon that people on the internet, but not necessarily in real life, use 'snowflake' because they want to create a 'safe space' for their bigoted opinons.

The same with 'social justice warrior', its away of silencing people who question questionable opinions.....

No not at all, it's more about them being special or unique if you will

Just another word used by the Katie Hopkins types when people object to their obnoxious views.Snowflake, virtue signalling and social justice warrior are all from the same basket. Used to sneer at anyone who doesn't share their twisted views.
This, pretty much. sneery insults like SJW, snowflake, leftie, do gooder, liberals, pc gone maaad etc 90% of the time are uttered by obnoxious tw*ts who can't handle being pulled up on their abhorrent views.

I should have said it is intended to be derogatory. There would be nothing wrong with a person being fragile or sensitive but those using the term these days appear to think there is.

Do you mean that "obnoxious tw*t" isn't a "sneery insult" then? How about Katie Hopkins type" you'd be happy to be called both of those I take it?

Ahh but they are allowed to name call without repercussions as they can never be wrong.

obnoxious tw*t I'd be happy with, Katie Hopkins type not so much. There is a line you don't cross when it comes to insulting people and that crosses the line.

Pretty much this.

Generally it's a term used by moons who want to dismiss people who hold views that display a degree of sense and maturity and sensitivity that the morons will never achieve.

Yet you didn't throw any insults at BanglaRoad when they used it, you responded with "this, pretty much" so it was alright for them to cross the line.

It's a beautifully ironic phrase; invariably whipped out when the routinely offensive are themselves offended.

I find it tends to be used by people who are equally thin skinned and have hysterics when something matters to them is questioned.
It also came to prominence the day after the EU referendum result was announced.

There were a huge number of 15 - 35 year olds almost having breakdowns online and insulting pretty much everybody who didn't agree with their view point.

There was no reasoning with the majority of them. I was in the pub a few days later and fully grown adults 22- 33 were shouting down anybody who admitted to voting 'leave'

This isn't a post intended to debate the leave, remain or anything else. I'm just using the example I personally saw.

He wasn't calling me it, you asked if I'd mind being called a Katie Hopkins type and I said no because it would be a horrific insult to me because I'm not a Katie Hopkins type.

You're taking this too seriously Planets, have a drop of sherry

That's odd... I thought it was only SJWs and students who got offended... would you like a safe space?

Not taking it seriously at all see below

Oh i'm not offended at all, i'm just laughing at the double standard of people who are so upset at the word snowflake while they call people "obnoxious tw*ts* and "morons".

See my earlier post for my opinion on students and their safe spaces.

It's very different in the American University system Muggins.
A long while ago i was reading articles by Law Professors saying students had requested the word "violate" not be used in class because the word was triggering.
HERE's one of the articles i read on the subject which is 2 years old now it's only just starting to filter over to this country in the last 12 months or so. SOme students requested the cessation of teaching rape law as it was "distressing". It was this generation of student with this type of obsession with triggering and micro aggression that caused the term snowflake to develop in common parlance.
There was another Professor at the University of California who wrote an article about how the phrase "I believe the most qualified person should get the job” had been banned as it was a micro aggression. Then there was the girl in a UK university thrown out of a meeting because she raised her hand to ask a question when this was also banned in the safe space.

If you're vocally empathetic you're a 'special snowflake'. Sociopathy seems to be socially acceptable all of a sudden.

It was quite impressive that we were all posting so much and so quickly that DS couldn't keep up and was having constant issues showing all posts!

I think I added 1000 to my post count in about 6 weeks

I have started to hear it used more and more lately. Well mostly written, but I have heard people actually say it as well.
Mainly on xbox live. It's usually used there as a slightly less offensive way of calling you a little bitch, eg "omg the snowflake has been triggered, better get him to a safe space".
