Who's had enough of Dot?
Why is she so rubbish? She can only see a blur in her central vision but she can hold a book up close to her face and read it aged 89? She seems desperate to spend Christmas with family but turns down all the invitations she gets from her family. Everyone wants to help her but she rejects offer after offer.

Because Dot's a proud woman. Even now she's getting older and her eyesight is poor she won't admit to needing help because she doesn't want her family or friends to feel like she's a burden to them.
I absoutely love Dot and June Brown has done some amazing work on EE over the years. As long as June's willing and able to keep working I hope she stays. |

I've never liked Dot personally, she's like how Edna was in Emmerdale. I'm not keen on judgemental oldies who look down at everyone in disapproval. Maybe my being atheist has something to do with it, as I always find myself rolling my eyes whenever she spouts something from the bible (especially when it to seems always be that the person she's talking to couldn't care less about what the bible says.) I prefer old characters who are like Betty from Emmerdale and Patrick, who are capable of having fun.

I do believe she needs to die on screen. ( soon) I hate off screen deaths. enough is enough, I do enjoy her character, but it is time to go.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

She acts as if her life will be empty without the grim launderette, when in reality she'd have dozens of voluntary and holy projects to be getting on with. If she's that bothered about being alone and not useful, she could serve Christmas grub to the homeless...there are shelters all over the East End.
I think the character will die when June Brown does. She's probably already filmed a death scene which could be neatly slotted in when the time comes. |

Sorry to disappoint, but there was a report back in the Autumn that June Brown had signed a 3-year contract for EE.
As for being the worst character on EE, there are many more who must be far worse than Dot Branning (who, in my opinion is an excellent and complex character beautifully played by June Brown) |

And I don't think Dot's issue is simply that she's 'no longer useful'. Doing some volunteering might be good for her but she's unlikely to see that in the emotional state she's in. The launderette is one of the few places she felt completely comfortable. A place she knew like the back of her hand. She is mourning losing it because she knows that now she has even fewer places in her life where she is able to feel happy and safe. |

I think you're underestimating the psychology that goes into losing your eyesight. My mum watched her father go from a proud, outgoing member of the community to an armchair-ridden old man in the space of a few months when his eyesight went. It is one of the worst possible things you can go through and it would knock anyone's confidence, particularly if it is a slow process and you do not feel able, for whatever reason, to speak to your relatives about it. I think in the brief scenes we've seen with Abi, Dot feels she isn't able to burden her family with this terrible thing she's going through, so she feels even more isolated.

All well and good if she'd been told it couldn't be cured but she refused to have the injections so she can't value her independence that much.

Complex is right. Her accent wanders from the East End to Buckingham Palace and back again in the space of ten minutes.
Anyway, she, like many people in real life, can assume a posh or more polished accent if need be. |

She would be a much better character if they didn't keep bringing in family for her, only to get rid of them a few months later. Trying to link her to the Brannings has always been a bit too tenuous for me. She ends ups just feeling like a spare part.

As I've said before, in my opinion not every character has to be all-singing, all-dancing, appearing in just the right amount of scenes, reacting with perfection to every situation. ("Why does character x do this when we all know she should be doing y??")
People are also very quick to call someone a spare part when they haven't had a storyline for a few weeks. I actually enjoy the fact that soaps have a mix of characters, none of whom are perfect. Dot isn't my favourite character, as far as older ones go, I love Patrick, but I do enjoy Dot's scenes. She is actually in a great situation for her age. She has a lovely house which will be worth a huge amount, and has lots of family and friends. |
