Someone in their late 80s working in a launderette they don't own, taking a job from the young unemployed when she's had an old age pension for over 20 years? Don't think so. Women her generation all retired at 60. Plus, she would have been sacked from the 'drette when she went to jail for months on end.

I find her stubborn rejection of the eye cure incredibly unrealistic. If she has such zest for life, why would she court disability?

I think June Brown is an excellent actress, and portrays Dot very well. But I have never liked Dot. The way she speaks to Patrick is dreadful.

I just want to add, since you both quoted the bible after my post complaining about the bible, that I don't have an issue with people voicing their religious beliefs. I just think people should also respect the freedom to not be religious. I mean no offence.

Doubt it, they wouldn't give you benefits above and beyond the old age pension if you'd refused NHS treatment for a curable condition. She is definitely scared, and the idea of an injection in the eye is horrendous, but the eye has fewer nerve endings than you'd think - it's exposed to the elements every day, after all. I've had a corneal ulcer scraped away and that didn't hurt. They can numb the eye really easily.

Patrick is lovely and supportive, but what Dot needs is a female relative to chivvy and coax her to the hospital. Ronnie could do this by saying she needed Dot to babysit and she couldn't be in charge of the kids half blind. Dot needs to be needed. If she was actually escorted to the hospital and Ronnie waited for her too, I'm sure she would go.

I thought she had one injection already. She was upset as it didn't have any immediate effect./improvement

She has had one treatment. The injections aren't a cure and don't improve the eyesight, they just slow down the rate of deterioration of the eyesight. I know this as my mum has AMD and has the injections into her eyes every month.

I don't think she had the treatment, did she? She was just making excuses to Patrick to get him off her back.

Thanks Cobblers.

I do think she took one treatment already.

I'm not sure now! I did think that she did have one treatment, we certainly saw her calling to book it, unless I've started imagining things, it has been known!

Hey, feel free to post what you want, Mel, I was just having a laugh. I didn't find your post offensive at all and I am not a Christian.

And I agree with you. That's the way it should be. We can agree to disagree on our beliefs, but we should always remain respectful of each other's viewpoints, I think.

because obviously she doesn't wish to, and she has no obligation to do so just to suit you. If you don't like the character then turn off when she comes on screen. It's as simple as that.

Why is that then? To suit you, or because it would genuinely add something to the show?

Wow, now I am really confused and may have maligned Dot needlessly, if someone saw her phoning that appointment through.

She isn't "taking a job from the young unemployed" . she is doing a job the employer employed her to do. A job belongs to an employer and they decide which candidate will get it within the law. I know some people seem to think they are entitled to a job because they are young and want everyone else out of one so they can have it, but i'm afraid you aren't. You are entitled to work, not to a particular job.

did they? Have you any statistical evidence to prove this? I know most will retire at 65 or earlier depending on the job, but others do keep working (in fact i fear more may be forced to do so as the years go on for various reasons including the continuous rise in the cost of living)

Most likely yes. But realistically a soap isn't going to stick to the letter of reality all the time, every time.

In what way. sometimes people do opt not to have to have injections/operations. You or i may have them, but we can't base our views and decisians across everybody, something you will learn when you become an adult and are out in the real world.

It could be for many reasons as explained above. I get you don't like the reality that some are different to you, but unfortunately the real world and reality are very different to black and white idealism.

Nope, I'll just criticise as I see fit instead.

The retirement age for women in the U.K. has been 60 until only very recently. She should have retired in 1987!

Plus many women of her generation didn't work at all...my grandma never did for instance and was proud of the fact.

I'm a Christian but i love what you've just said

People need to respect the fact that not everyone will agree on everything and theres some things I dont agree with that i get absolute hate for

Regardless, no one goes out there way to have a 'bad intention', we just do the best we can to make sense of the world and interpreate it how we can

She has said that she cannot afford to retire:

Quote:
“"Anyway, I can't afford to retire. I never had the money to start a pension - I didn't start to make any real money until I was 58 - and now it's not worth much.

"I've always been afraid of being poor when I'm old. I think it's a dreadful thing to be strapped for cash when you are elderly. It's awful when you're young, too, but you always have hope that things can get better.

"As long as I am capable of working, I can learn lines and move around, I will carry on. I think I'd be utterly bored if I stopped.”
