Wind and rain really getting up now here in NW. Expected to be bad tomorrow and on Xmas Day. Gusts of 40-50mph here according to BBC Weather. Temperatures of 9-11c around the north west today, 7-9c tomorrow and 11-13c on Sunday, so another mild, wet and windy Xmas this year.

Weather Outlook for the Xmas Weekend

Storm Barbara will bring severe weather to parts of the UK today. This morning starts with stormy conditions in the north west of the UK but elsewhere it is mostly dry.

Through the day strong winds and outbreaks of rain spread southeastwards with the heaviest bursts reaching London by the early evening. Wind gusts of over 80mph are expected in the far north and severe gales affect much of the west and north west. Even in the south east gusts of over 50mph are possible. During the afternoon colder and showery conditions follow into the north west.

Maximum temperatures range from about 7C (45F) in Scotland to 13C (55F) in the south west. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the wet weather clears away southeastwards and winds ease. In the north west wintry showers continue and it remains very windy.

Christmas Eve should be mostly dry in the south but cloud builds. In the north it will be windy and showery in the morning but through the afternoon persistent rain spreads in from the west.

Christmas begins very mild and breezy with stormy conditions in the north and during the day strong winds and outbreaks of rain push southeastwards. Colder weather follows on into the north late in the day and there is a chance of wintry showers in a few places.

Buzz looks at the storm risk. To keep up to date with the latest view for the big day check our Christmas Countdown which is updated daily.

Further Ahead

The 16 day GEFS ensemble show the weather turning unsettled in the short term but after Boxing Day drier conditions return. By the New Year it begins to turn colder.

Looking at the GFS Chart, at the moment Storm Barbara is passing to the north west of us, before tonight it moves north-eastwards before another unnamed depression hits on Sunday in the same place bringing further wet and windy weather for the northern half of the uk. Further South it should be very mild and drier.

The same thing happened this November when we got Storm Angus then a couple of days later another unnamed Storm hit which was actually much more widespread (but not as destructive) than the actual "official" storm so it can happen sometimes.

After Sunday the second depression clears and on Monday we begin to see high pressure taking charge into next week bringing drier, more settled, crisp, sunnier and colder weather.

Non event thus far in NI and we're supposed to be in the middle of it as we speak. Drizzly rain, few gusts but nothing to get excited about

LOL all these storms have such non-threatening names. I really can't see anything named Barbara doing any damage.

If the event that ends the world is called Barbara I will eat my hat.

Storm Conor coming Xmas Day too, but the Express really tell the grim truth of it.

Quote:
“BRITAIN faces a double-whammy of Christmas weather hell with two major storms poised to strike this weekend, unleashing 100mph gales, torrential rain and thunder.”

They must do this for a laugh.

I haven't read the article, do they find a way to blame the EU?

I think it is very unkind to name storms after people, it could cause them undue psychological trauma.

Then looking further ahead on the GFS by next weekend the higher pressure starts to break down and we get more of an atlantic flow again.

I'm up in the NW - near Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria. The local roads flood easily so I was up at dawn for an early shop, then checking guttering, drains etc and securing bins.. But still waiting for it all to kick off. So far just a bit windy and rainy. Situation normal!

I'm in Co. Antrim and our drain pipe blew off the wall so I had to go out and get new brackets and got stuck in Xmas traffic, my new small potted Xmas trees blew over and I had to put them in the garage so now my front door looks less festive, had to chase my kerby box around the street and I had to cancel a dog training session because my dog acts weird in the wind so Barbara has already crossed me this morning. All settled down now though.

Eta: husband is in Craigavon and says it's rough there and been sending me screen shots of forecasts and ominous texts urging me to be very careful. And yet asked me to take his car to the garage several towns away to get new brake pads. Yeah, stay home and stay safe wifey unless it's to run around after my useless ass.

It's quite gusty here in Hampshire which is a long way from the North West where it's meant to be. Also raining too.
