That maximum shopping frenzy prediction
tanstaafl
23-12-2016
Earlier this week I read a prediction that Christmas shopping for food would peak at 11 am to midday on Friday 23. Well, having just returned I think I can say that the prediction appears to be spot on. At 10 o'clock things in our local town centre weren't too bad, but by 11:30 Sainsbury's was heaving.

I reckon it will be tomorrow morning. More people off work rushing out to get the last little bits of this and that before the Christmas celebrations really kick in later in the day.

I'm going in after lunchtime, expecting a fab time. Have you ever noticed how manners and common courtesy seem to go out the door in supermarkets and even more so at xmas. I noticed on BBC this morning they reported from Asda and the reporter got in the way of an old granny, she wasn't best pleased and didn't give a damn that she was live on national tv.

my contribution to the frenzy will be

a pot of double cream

My husband went into Morrisons at 8am and he said it was just about manageable. M&S just after though was very busy. A colleague and I have just been into the same M&S and it was no busier than a normal lunch time so it probably died down

Did all mine at 10pm last night in Asda. Nice and quiet, no queues, same as normal. Learned my lesson on the day before Christmas Eve a few years ago. Never again! But the growth of online ordering and home delivery should ease things this year.

Went to Sainsbury at 6.30 this morning, quite busy, by the time I left at 7.30it was packed and the car park was full. Was worth getting up early.

Sainsburys wasn't too bad at 8.30 this morning. Did start getting bus just as I'd left.

We did ours at midnight last night at Asda and it wasn't too bad, popped into Sainsburys at lunch time and it was jammed packed, but it wasn't really taking that long to get through the checkouts.

West Brom was busy especially in the new shopping mall and the indoor market, but I think the bad weather kept some people at home.

I'm away for Christmas, but went out about 10 pm last night (22nd) to get a few things for when I get back. The local Morrisons is open until midnight most of this week, and I was curious to see how many people would be out at the time. Whole families, including young kids were there. I though it would just be me and the usual oddballs out at that time.

It was far less busy than it's been during the daytime this week, but enough visitors to make it worthwhile being open I'd say. I totally forgot to get any Christmas cards (I'd meant to get them on Monday) while I was there. I had to make an emergency trip out about 16:30 this afternoon, with just half an hour before the local card shop was closing. Still, better than last year when I bought them on Christmas Eve...

I managed to fill up the car at the supermarket too without having to queue, which was nice. Last year I ended up queuing for ages when I decided I'd be OK filling up on Christmas Eve before my trip back to my home town. That and stopping off in town to buy Christmas cards meant I didn't end up getting there until nearly 22:00.

Went to Tesco at 5:30am on Xmas Eve last year thinking I'd beat the rush. Unfortunately half of MK had the same idea and car park was already packed.

I remember going at opening time one New Years Eve and finding the supermarket already busy. It felt really odd buying booze at that time of the morning and not being still up from the night before, but then it's been a long time since I was a student!

I was at Tesco just now, completely packed out. Scanned a load of stuff then had to go home for my card. How embarrassing.

It is reported that our local Tesco Extra (open 24 hours) was blitzed yesterday evening and night, and by this morning lots of shelves were empty
They were advising customers today to come back later today when they had a delivery

Aren't we only 3 days from revolution if the shops ever run out of food?

I was in Asda earlier and it was heaving, which was to be expected. Friday is always busy and the 23rd is usually the busiest food shopping day, so the two came together to create a perfect storm.

I find Christmas Eve tends to be a bit calmer because most people don't like leaving their food shopping that late.

A few years ago, we were passing Asda an hour or so before closing while on the way home so decided to pop in.

Walking past the fresh meat someone was asking a rather weary assistant "do you have any turkeys?". After the predictable response, they asked about chickens; I think they ended up having gammon that Christmas (they were in plentiful supply).

Part of me hopes they had a last-minute change of plans - surely nobody is so stupid as to think that a supermarket will have any poultry an hour before closing on Christmas Eve?

Huge Asda local to me is open until 8pm on Christmas Eve.

Plenty of time yet.

They sent me £14 off £140.......Dunno what demographic band they thought I was in, but I used the £4 off £40 at Tesco's"s....So there's a clue...

i think you get better deals the longer you don`t shop there - or more accurately - the more you don`t use your card.

i missed most of my my tesco dates [£6 off £40 and £4 off the next 2 £40`s] .

waitrose is my nearest supermarket and it`s on the way to where my food contributions are heading.

i have almost convinced myself.

edit: my waitrose [spit] vouchers are 2 x £6 off a £30.
