Interesting read.
I was waiting for a version of "didn't happen". It's Ds, you always get one or two.

In the late 1990s all of our family came down with the most awful flu. My nan came to visit whilst all of sat slumped in chairs with fever and spluttering watching some awful film on channel 4. I was about 14 and was bored beyond belief. After the new year my Nan said it was "the best Christmas she'd ever had" as it was nice and relaxed.

The odd thing is is that looking back they were all immensely boring Christmases but now all my grandparents have passed away and my parents are getting on they look rosy.

I think mine was when I'd just left home in a bad way and it was my first Christmas alone. I was happy in the morning, went to the pub and drank loads of whisky. Was sick on myself in the pub so left then met up with the heroin addicts who lived below who seemed a nice couple but ended up nearly killing each other. Sat with them for a while, gave them my cider and lost myself in a bottle of whisky that I had in my room. Woke up on the floor next morning and that was that. But the main point is I totally lost control which I hate to do.

Have you had any particularly crap experiences at Christmas? Crap presents? Crap meals? Crap company? Crap news? Anything that should have been crap that somehow turned into something less crap? Share your crappy Christmas stories.
The worst one I had was when I had toothache and the only thing that would relieve it was cycling in the cold air. So I spent much of that Christmas Day, cycling round random country lanes.

If you were about 14, surely it would have been the early 1990's, given you were born in 1978.

That usually makes tooth ache much worse, cold air on it.

I once had a wonderful Xmas on my own. Had a spectacular fry up for lunch and listened to music of my choice. Total serenity!

True, but if you had it like that every year, I doubt you'd like it after a while.

The issue was sorted in my absence.

Ruddy cooker. What a time for it to go tits-up! Oh, well... new one fitted.

For the first few minutes it did, then it numbed completely.

Frosty air.

Oh, well... I'll add mine... and I've posted it before. It's definitely in the category of crap made into anything but.

I was in a children's home in 1985, and I was the only one with nowhere to go for Christmas. The staff had to work because of me. Rather than let it be a shit day, they did everything they could to make it a year to remember. Santa Claus the Movie is still my favourite Christmas movie, and it's all their fault. I still think of it as the best Christmas I ever had. I had bigger gifts in later years, and perhaps more company, but that one was made special. I wish I could thank them all.

Christmas 2004 was pretty crap. Found a rather painful lump Christmas Eve. Nothing serious thankfully; but the next 7 days were unpleasant, as was having to spend the new year having surgery.

Christmas can only be crappy if you are alone and lonely on Christmas. If you are surrounded by people who you you love, it can't be crappy.

No need for anyone to be alone or lonely at Christmas
There are plenty of organisations, churches and charities, who run Christmas dinners for the homeless and those on their own. They are always looking for volunteers to help out

Absolutely. If I was alone at Christmas, I'd be volunteering to help those much, much less fortunate than me.

- and there are legions -

I've spent Christmas 2013, 2014 and 2015 in hospital. You want a crappy Christmas? Try being the only patient with no visitors on the cancer ward.

I was supposed to be in again this year but I've got the flu so I'm home alone instead. It's not as bad as being in hospital and at least I get to eat chocolate Brazil nuts!

Dad suddenly dying on Boxing Day of a heart attack? Does that count?

Being spiked on Christmas Eve, thankfully my mum came to pick me up before anything awful could happen but I spent all of Christmas Day and Boxing Day sleeping or throwing up.
