Whenever UK broadcasters show the edits of movies which are made for daytime viewing on American tv and for airlines, then they will be edited and dubbed to pieces. The Robocop movie another poster mentioned would likely have been in this category.
If we talk TV shows I remember when Channel 4 broadcast Angel at teatime, there was quite a furore over just how much they cut out of it. |

I remember the first showing of Beverly Hills Cop on the BBC in the late 80s with all the f'ing overdubbed. It was a hoot, especially the locker room scene with Foley's boss "tearing him a new one" - is f**king Foley in here ... took on whole new life!

Don't forget the infamous 8pm ITV showing of Three Days Of The Condor where they cut several scenes which were essential in order to follow the plot!
Plus, why are the BBC showing Dances With Wolves at lunchtime? What's the point in screening such a beautiful film and having to chop it up for daytime? (it's a 12). |

I don't know why they bother showing any film if it isn't suitable for them or the time slot they want to fill. Just don't buy that film and put on Disney instead.
I remember a showing of Carpenter's The Thing. Now this is not a family film with a pink princess, it's clearly a bloody scary horror film. There is a famous part where a severed head sprouts legs and walks across the floor like a spider. Now understandably, Kurt Russell's was the same as ours "You've got to be F***ing joking!!!" before turning a flame thrower on it. Of course that bit got very badly cut out and all you got was a very disjointed spider and then flame thrower. |

TV is so prudish and still very sexist. In Big Brother they will show the girls nudity all the time and as much as they can but it's very rare for them to show male nudity. One male was taking a shower nude but all they showed was a very brief long shot and above the waist from then on; yet when a female streaks around the garden they show it all from every angle they can. |

Is there any reason why films with strong language can't be shown uncut but the offending word dropped out?
I know it would be a bit annoying but it works reasonably well on the UKTV channels. It's certainly better than some of the appalling edits which jump all over or scenes suddenly ending. |

I actually remember this being done on a showing of Brubaker, again it was some years ago on ITV, started around 10.30 or 10.40 after the news, for the first half-hour or so the swearing was dubbed with silence, after 11.00 they left everything in! I can see where it would be irritating and wouldn't really work though if there were several swear words in quick succession.

All somewhat ridiculous in this day and age of the internet. Why would any teenager wait for TV to show an ejaculation scene when they can see 10s of millions of them within seconds of typing it into Google?

I don't think so, which is ironic given for all its nudity it's pretty unerotic.

Smoky and the bandit whilst not cut, is probably the most censored as the sheriff's constant cussing is cut out or changed on the ITV version.
"Daddy the top came off" "You Don't Say". |

What did they dub it with? Do you remember?
The fact that the words are phonetically different did not seem to occur to anyone. Was like watching a dubbed foreign film |

I did see 'Smokey & The Bandit' on an ITV afternoon once: Burt's giving it large on the police radio calling the cops a bunch of overdubbed playground insults, rather than the original lines, and then the copper threatens to arrest him for his language.

IIRC in Beverley Hills Cop shown before watershed F*** was replaced by "Hell".

E.T.'s on ITV1 this afternoon. I can't see 'dick breath' getting past the censors.
