I've always compared recasting Michelle with recasting somebody like Bianca or Grant. She is up there with the most recognisable faces in EastEnders history. They got away with recasting Martin because he was never a major character, whereas Michelle was a big deal for the first ten years of the show. It's a risk!

It's weird because I always pictured Jenna playing a character in EE connected to Max somehow. But with her playing Michelle Fowler it makes it weird and I'm not sure how I think about that.

The issue for those who have watched from the beginning is that Michelle was involved in the story that truly made EastEnders a huge success. Who's the father? She was of course involved in many other stories but that was the one that gripped the nation, well before the Den/Angie 1986 story line.
Dreadful decision, she should never be recast.

I'll reserve judgement until she appears but this is weird. Imagine if Stacey left now and came back in 21 years played by a different actress.

It's an even bigger deal than Stacey. Michelle comes from a time when the show was hitting 20 million viewers every week.

It's a shame that it was confirmed only a few hours / a day before the episode seeing as it must have been kept secret up until now - I would've loved to see the forum's reaction, after broadcast, to seeing that the speculation about Michelle was right. Weirdly a photo of Mark Jr was leaked a week before he returned. But I'm looking forward to seeing Michelle!

Blimey, well it looks like they've done it! Will be interesting to see the response, I imagine it will be mixed.
But Jenna Russell is a great actress, looking forward to seeing her on screen. Will be strange seeing Michelle played by another actress though.

With the damp squib that was the secret son reveal I don't have much faith in this at all.
What will EE do now when they are running out of ideas? Bringing back Michelle really is the endgame. Expect Ali Osman to return next Christmas...

I'm guessing that she'll either be back at the end of tonight or tomorrow's episode. However now that I think about it, I feel like EE will have her arrive on Xmas eve to get people excited for the Xmas episode.
Also, tonight Phil is at the top of the cast list with Sharon second, but this is the other way around for tomorrow's episode.

It does for me. I've watched from the beginning I think with family and Sharon on the square there's potential for a lot of storylines with Michelle.

The characters might be there but the writers aren't.
All we need is Scarlett Thingemebob to return to play Vikki, and her and Jenna Russell could both have unbearable American accents
