My dog always gets leftovers when there are any, so she really lucks in over Christmas. She's quite the gourmet and loves spicy, garlicky food. They never seem to upset her stomach or even make her farty (she's the least flatulent dog I've ever known).
A few Christmases ago, she tucked in to leftover turkey, leek and gammon pie, plus veg, and seemed very unwell afterwards. She just lay on her side under an armchair for hours on end, barely moving. As she was a lively young dog at the time, this was most alarming and when it had gone on for 4 or 5 hours, I was so worried I took her to the vet.
After a thorough examination, he pronounced that he thought she'd overeaten. That bit of news cost me £70.
Since then, she only gets small portions.
