It's not high on my list of songs deserving a reappraisal. Has someone done a good version of it or something?

It's okay, hardly a classic but not really a novelty song as you say.

by definition its not a novelty song, it is a serious ballad. but the accompanying vid was soooo cheesy it kinda brought it down to 'joke' level.

actually, id suggest bonnie tylers 'total eclipse of the heart' is more worthy of 'novelty' status...

I agree, come to think of it. The song itself isn't great but it isnt a novelty song.
Now, the video, featuring a young blonde girl (who isnt even Rene) and an overweight middle-aged Italian man (God bless him) was the novelty aspect. |

This was on TOTP 1982 last night.pretty sure it was shot in Birmingham where Renato ran his bistro.they wanted us to think it was Rome.it was a bit naff even back then but innocent harmless cheese.I remember seeing an interview with Renato a few years back and he was a lovely guy didnt take himself too seriously.I often wonder why they used a different lady in the video .I think I may have read years later she was unavailable due to recording commitments so they drafted in one of the production team together with a bad wig.

Renato's was in Tamworth. The thing you saw might have been where Justin Lee Collins went arounin chasing up one-hit wonders. As you say, seemed a lovely guy.
