This thread is basically what the title says, try and predict what the overnight ratings will be for the Christmas Special (The Return of Doctor Mysterio).

I think it will be somewhere in between 5.4-5.6 million but I am interested to hear other people's predictions.

Before I clicked on the thread I was going to say my guess was 5 and a half million so am definitely like-minded here!

eta It's not a bad slot between GBBO and Strictly so might be a bit higher? Sorry, Brandon, you got a case of the grand ennui, butt?

Well I hope so, but the highest overnight rating last Christmas Day was 7.6m for Mrs Brown's Boys and ratings for the day have been down across the board over the last few years. Suspect this year will not buck the trend...

Google isn't always your friend if you're not paying full attention and get the year wrong (the Mrs Brown's Boys overnight I quoted was for 2014) so yeah....you are quite right!

Doctor Who is sandwiched between Bake-Off and SCD. Traditionally on Christmas Day viewers take longer to change the channel. So I predict DW will be up YOY, ONLY due to the sorrounding shows being higher than last year.

So I predict: 6.1m

Well people may watch just because its Christmas and I know a lot of people like Doctor Who at Christmas even if its just on the background, but if it was a regular series run it would be average.

It will be up YOY ONLY because its in a stronger sandwich of programmes.

I'm a massive fan of Doctor Who, so I would not say its not popular.

I'm going to guess 6.3m for the overnights.

- Doctor Who performs relatively well, as far as Xmas day output is concerned.
- The year absence might draw people in.
- Being bookended by two even more successful shows may do it a favour.
- Unlike last year, the special doesn't come just weeks after the show was plugging its big Series 9 finale event. As such, even with less promotion it's more of an event to the mainstream than last year which would have come across as simply the last episode of Series 9 to many.

My contribution to this thread is barely an educated guess. I was just bored and lamenting the passing of another birthday which has left me feeling old

For those watching as it's being shown:

Between 4.9 and 6.9.

Include those that watch it after it has been shown, I would say:

Between 6.5 to 8.9.

Overnights - 5.02 million.

No recent series to help it along, so it will suffer somewhat.

I do think the Christmas Day ratings are much more affected by whether families watch TV that night or choose to record/watch later. Last year's entire BBC1 evening line up got about 5m-6m overnights, including Dr Who. So could be 5m, could be 7m. Depends how many people get Beer Pong on Christmas Day!
