I currently have a Humax Freesat box using my previous Sky dish, LNB and cabelling.

An offer too good to miss came up for Sky Q so I have ordered this and have the install in a few days time. My plan is to use this for the 12 month contract and then cancel and revert to our Freesat set up.

I just have a few questions:

1. Will the existing cabling work or will it need to be replaced ? - I'm concerned as it means pulling all the floorboards and laminate floor up otherwise (or having it botched around the room.

2. I assume they install a new dish and LNB. Will the LNB work for Freesat at the end of the 12 months when we return their box and start using our old one again ?

3. Does Sky require an active phone line near the box as part of the install (as they used to do) ?

Is there anything else we need to be aware of for our plan to work ?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

In answer to your questions:

1. If the existing wiring is in good condition and in working order with no issues, they'll just use that providing it's a dual feed coax.

2. Again if the dish is ok they'll use it and just replace the LNB but if it's an old dish they'll most likely replace both. The new LNB used for Sky Q will be a wideband LNB which will no longer work with your Freesat box so you'll need to request a hybrid LNB which will work with both.

3. No, they just need to connect it to your broadband router either by WiFi or ethernet.

Hope that helps and enjoy Sky Q

if you want Sky Q and don't want the new cable running as it is currently behind something then there isn't much to do really. A hybrid will be installed if other rooms away from the main Q box need a freesat connection but if just the one twin cable comes off the dish to where your humax is they will either just use that with a wideband or leave your old dish as is and run a new twin feed to the place of the main Q box off a new dish.

Thank you for the replies.

The current dish is probably 4 or 5 years old (as is the cabling). Have the dishes changed in that time or will that still be suitable ?

The Sky Q box is going to go where the Freesat box is - so they are both in the same place, but hopefully they will be happy to install a hybrid LNB without having to cable up a separate twin feed ? - Mainly so if/when we swap back I can just unplug the feed from the Sky Q box and plug into the Humax Freesat box.

Another question - Does the Sky Q box have the feature to stream media from a PC to the TV - as the Humax Freesat box does ?

If they won't fit a hybrid LNB (unless you have freesat in another room, they're not obliged to), ask them to give you your old LNB and change it back in a year's time.

I asked for a hybrid lnb as I wanted to keep my freesat pvr but the engineer said I would have to order one and it would cost £80 so instead he installed an extra dish and cabling so we can use both systems so it would be easy for me to cancel after 12 months to get a new deal.

The installer was not an engineer. Sky don't use engineers for installations.

There's no need to be pedantic.
