Not sure I can help but I understand, I find Christmas time makes it a bit harder too.

Personally I do a lot of mindfulness during this time and also seeing a therapist helps me. If you haven't already then go to see your GP, some are excellent.

Don't forget if it is really difficult the samaritans are always on the end of a phone line.

Like gilesb, I don't know if I can help, but I understand how it feels, and I'm always here if needed.

It would be nice if all us anxious people could help each other in some way...

Hope you're ok. xx

Get a referral from your GP to attend Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - it worked wonders for my BF who had severe anxiety and depression. Whilst he's not completely "cured" (never will be) he's come a long way and there is a vast improvement.

What does this mean?

You either take it or you don't.

...because i have bad side effects and it doesn't really work for me
Other drugs are available.

Explain this to your GP, not members of an internet forum

Becoming drug dependent is a common problem so it's good your not taking them.
I also have have high anxiety and tried CBT, but I didn't get very far with that.

What works for me is volunteering. It works amazingly well because I now give myself very little time to make things about me me me anymore, plus its very rewarding.

Obviously it's horses for courses, but I believe cases of anxiety are so common these days because we are so focused on ourselves.

A very good recommendation and point. I do think too many are overly self obsessed these days.

That said, it's possible to start worrying too much about others or about global issues etc. Too much worry is a waste of time full stop.

Hi OP. I really feel for you, I have suffered from severe anxiety for years and it really is the most horrible thing. In the early days diazepam was my saviour but my GP will no longer prescribe it for me so I've had to find an alternative way to cope. It sounds trite but keeping busy when I am on the brink of an 'episode' is my solution.

I have to physically be doing something, so even if it means cleaning the kitchen cupboards for the fourth time in two days, I make myself do it. Try and read some books and CBT helps some poeple a lot.

This time of year is especially hard. If you ever need to talk, feel free to PM me.

i cant really do volunteer work as I can't be around other ppl due to social anxiety. I lasted 2 days volunteering in a charity shop last year. It wasnt for me, i tried to push myself to do it but I found it really difficult sadly.

Have you tried meditation or breathing exercises? There are some free apps/ podcasts out there. It sounds a bit airy-fairy, but it can really help. I've found controlled breathing quite useful personally.

Also, you can find some useful videos on YouTube for anxiety.

CBT is 100% a complete and total waste of time. Its effects are short-lived, to the extent that is nothing more than a placebo. At best, it is a coping strategy.

Mindfulness is the only way to cure anxiety (and I mean 'cure'). You don't 'do mindfulness from time to time', or dabble in it. You have to commit to it daily, as part of your lifestyle. It works, it is incredibly effective, the entire Buddhist religion is built on it. It can turn absolutely horrific, dominating thoughts in to something that has absolutely no effect on you.

There is no need to suffer from anxiety, it is a relic of our caveman ancestry. Search for a local (and experienced) Mindfulness coach, pay the money and let them train you. It will change your life for the better, and as close to a miracle cure as I have ever experienced in my life.

Mindfulness is not a fad or a trend - only people who don't understand it think that. If you have a consistent, experiential understanding of Mindfulness, you will completely agree with me. It is 1000s of years old and is completely natural.

Is it something that I can teach myself Jimothy? You've sold it to me.

Same for me on and off for years, all my life near enough. If you have generalized anxiety disorder, basically us folks are stuck with it for life. You just have to do the best YOU can. Getting help can work for some. But I think most people do find ways to get on with life, in the best way they can manage. Without needing regular help. Most folks who have had anxiety issues for years and years, in the end they do tend to find their own coping mechanisms. Good luck.

After having a few panic attacks in the last few days, I've been searching for help online, and came up with this, which I thought I would share here:

That's my experience too.

I personally would try to avoid anti-depressants. They made me worse.

Diazepam is good for occasional/emergency use.
